history

Grass track race on the Leineweberring in Bielefeld

Five years after the Second World War, there was also a great desire for a wide range of sports in Bielefeld. As the second largest production location for two-wheelers in Germany (after Nuremberg), it made sense for Bielefeld to found a club dedicated to (two-wheel) motorsport. A group from Bielefeld around the lawyer Gründewald founded the association " Der Motorsport Club Bielefeld ".

Shortly after it was founded, the first motorcycle races were held on the “ Galgenheide ” in the Quelle district . The first few years were golden years in terms of audience participation. From 1950 to 1954, between 25,000 and 30,000 people regularly attended the races with mostly local drivers on the Galgenheide.

In 1969, the club had to look for a new sports facility because the Galgenheide was no longer available. The motorsport enthusiasts found what they were looking for in the east of Bielefeld with the “Am schwarzen Weg” race track. The first international race under the auspices of the Bielefeld Motorsport Club was also held here. If the only foreign participant in this first race was a soldier from the British Army , internationally renowned drivers took part in the races shortly afterwards.

This racetrack could not be used for long either because the city of Bielefeld was planning to build a new stadium for Arminia Bielefeld here. Even if these plans were never implemented in the end, there were talks with the city of Bielefeld about a sports facility where motorsport could be held permanently. As a result of these discussions, Der Motorsport Club Bielefeld leased an area on Eckendorfer Strasse from the city of Bielefeld in 1972. In 1973 the 700 m long Leineweberring was opened here with a grass track race. In the following years the members of the club gradually expanded the route.

In the following years, The Motorsport Club hosted many top-class long and grass track races on the Leineweberring. These included the semi-finals of the 1996 European Grass Track Championships, the finals of the 2002 and 2003 Grass and Long Track World Championships, and the 2008 European Sidecar Championship finals.
