Chad Billins (born May 26, 1989 in Marysville , Michigan ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with Adler Mannheim from the German Ice Hockey League since 2019 . Apart from ten missions for the Calgary Flames , the defender was unable to establish himself in the National Hockey League and has therefore spent his career in minor leagues and in Europe. He was also part of Team USA at the 2018 Winter Olympics .

Career

Youth and college

Chad Billins played for the Little Caesars youth program in his native Michigan. In 2006 he moved to the Alpena IceDiggers in the North American Hockey League , the second highest junior league in the country. After a season there he rose to the senior United States Hockey League by joining the Waterloo Black Hawks . The defender then enrolled at Ferris State University and ran from then on for their ice hockey team, the Ferris State Bulldogs , in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's game operations . Billins played inconspicuously at Ferris State University, but increased his personal statistics significantly in the 2011/12 season to 29 scorer points in 43 games, so that he was appointed to the CCHA First All-Star Team .

Professional area

Nevertheless, Billins was not considered in any NHL Entry Draft , so he joined the Grand Rapids Griffins from the second-rate American Hockey League (AHL) as a free agent in July 2012 . In his first year as a professional, the defender convinced with 37 points from 76 games, was then appointed to the AHL All-Star Classic and promptly won the playoffs for the Calder Cup with the Griffins at the end of the season . The Calgary Flames from the National Hockey League (NHL) took this as an opportunity to provide the American with a one-year contract in July 2013. As expected, he was mainly used in their organization with the farm team , the Abbotsford Heat , in the AHL, but made his debut in the NHL in November 2013 and completed ten games for the Flames over the course of the season. Despite his 41 scorer points and another participation in the AHL All-Star Classic, his expiring contract in Calgary was not extended, so Billins left North America for the first time and joined the HK CSKA Moscow from the Continental Hockey League .

However, his contract in Moscow was terminated before the end of the year, so that Billins moved to Luleå HF in Svenska Hockeyligan (SHL) in December 2014 . Within the SHL, the defender was signed by Linköpings HC in summer 2015 , in whose jersey he led the entire league in the plus / minus statistics (+27; together with Robert Rosén ). As a result, Billins returned to North America in July 2016 by signing a one-year deal with the Vancouver Canucks in the NHL. The Canucks only used him in the AHL with the Utica Comets , so that after a year he returned to Linköpings HC and there again signed a one-year contract.

International

Billins gained his first international experience at the 2015 Deutschland Cup , where he won the silver medal with the USA national team . After participating in this competition again in November 2017, it was announced almost a month later that the defender had been nominated for Team USA's line-up at the 2018 Winter Olympics . He benefited from the decision of the National Hockey League not to interrupt the season for this Olympiad and thus ban their players from participating. In Pyeongchang he then finished seventh with the team.
