After the left-handed shooter was often used in the junior team during his first season in Örnsköldsvik , he was part of the Swedish team the following year. His personally most successful season was the 1999/00 game year, when Alavaara was able to achieve 16 points scorer in a total of 56 league games.
In summer 2001, the now 26-year-old decided to switch to league rivals Frölunda HC , with whom he won the Swedish championship in 2003 and 2005 . The Swede was one of the top performers within the team in the six years that he went on the ice for Frölunda HC. At the end of the 2006/07 season , Alavaara decided against a contract extension and instead moved to other European countries. Ultimately, the management could it Kloten Flyers of a commitment in the Swiss National League A convincing.
After only one season Alavaara left the club again to then lace up the skates for the Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg from the German Ice Hockey League in the 2008/09 season . At the beginning of February 2009, the defender extended his expiring contract in Wolfsburg for another two years and was in the Lower Saxony squad until the end of 2011, with whom he was runner-up in his last season.
For the 2011/12 season he returned to his home in Sweden, where he was signed by Skellefteå AIK from the Elitserien. In January 2012 his contract with the AIK was terminated and Alavaara moved to Austria to the EHC Linz . There he played 26 games and was Austrian champion with the Black Wings . At the beginning of April 2012 it was announced that he would end his active career and return to his home country to work as an assistant coach in the U20 super elite at the Elitserien club MODO Hockey . From the 2013/14 season, the Swede was employed as an assistant coach for the MODO professional team in the Svenska Hockeyligan for two and a half years , before the entire coaching staff was dismissed in November 2015 due to persistent failure. Then he was a scout for the Buffalo Sabers .
