Tomáš Mertl (born March 11, 1986 in Budweis , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech ice hockey player who has been under contract with HC Škoda Plzeň in the Czech extra league since May 2019 .

Career

Tomáš Mertl comes from the offspring of HC České Budějovice , for whom he made his debut in the U18 extra league at the age of 15. During the 2003/04 season he played for the first time in the Extraliga , but was still mainly used in the U20 juniors. He also received match practice at clubs in the second-class first division such as KLH Vajgar Jindřichův Hradec , SK Slavia Třebíč and BK Mladá Boleslav . In the 2007/08 season he won the main round of the Extraliga with the Budweiser, so that they qualified for the new Champions Hockey League . In the 2008/09 season of the CHL he scored a goal in four missions.

In 2013, due to a sponsorship conflict, the club was relocated to Hradec Králové and renamed Mountfield HK . There he was able to improve his performance and was the third best scorer in the Extraliga in the 2014/15 season with 24 goals and 50 points. This made him interesting for clubs from better European leagues and in June 2015 he moved to the KHL Medveščak Zagreb in the Continental Hockey League . In February 2016 he was loaned to Mountfield HK, but returned to Zagreb for the 2016/17 season. For Zagreb he played 43 KHL games until December 2016 before he was handed over to Salawat Julajew Ufa . For Ufa he played in another 15 games before he returned to the Czech Republic after the end of the season and was signed by HC Škoda Plzeň . For Plzeň, he scored a total of 63 points in 60 Extraliga games in the 2017/18 season and was the top scorer in the Extraliga with 30 goals.

Due to the performances shown, he received a new contract in the KHL in May 2018, this time with Kunlun Red Star . After only 14 scorer points in 52 KHL games for Kunlun, he left the league in May 2019 and returned to HC Škoda Plzeň.

International

Tomáš Mertl took part with the Czech U18 selection in the U18 Junior World Championship , where he won the bronze medal.
