The Kölner Domsingschule is a private primary school run by the Archdiocese of Cologne . Her focus is on musical training for the cathedral choir as well as on Christian education. It was founded in 1986 on the initiative of the former Archbishop of Cologne, Joseph Cardinal Höffner. In the first 25 years she trained around 1,250 children.

School profile

The Kölner Domsingschule is an all-day school with a focus on music education, especially vocal training. An aptitude test is a prerequisite for admission. The first two classes each receive 25 minutes of lessons a day using the Ward method , so that they get four hours of music lessons per week with the usual music lessons in a regular school. In the 2nd grade, every child receives a basic recorder lesson . In the third school year, there is compulsory instrumental lessons with state-certified teachers from the Cologne Cathedral Choir's music school. From the 2nd half of the 3rd grade onwards, the students also take part in the B choir rehearsals of the cathedral choir for one year in order to familiarize them with the special situation of choir rehearsals and to introduce them to the choir's repertoire. Then the children are accepted into the A-choir of the boys 'or girls' choir according to their performance and from this point on they take part in all regular rehearsals of the main choirs.

In addition to musical training, the episcopal school attaches great importance to Christian education. Since the students of the Domsingschule are included in the liturgy in Cologne Cathedral , Catholic baptism is a prerequisite for acceptance. Church services , school prayers , meditations and preparation for First Communion are part of everyday school life. In addition, membership of at least one parent in the Catholic Church is a condition of admission. Likewise, all teachers belong to the Catholic Church and should consciously live the Catholic faith.

Organization and structure

The Cologne Cathedral Singing School is a school for boys and girls. Each grade is run in two courses. The school is integrated into the Kardinal-Höffner-Haus, which also houses the Cologne Cathedral Choir ( boys 'choir ), the girls' choir at Cologne Cathedral , the Cologne Cathedral Choir (mixed voices) and the Cologne Cathedral Choir music school . A boarding school is not affiliated with the Domsingschule. School fees are not charged. After the fourth year of school, most students switch to the Liebfrauenschule , which is also supported by the Archdiocese of Cologne and which offers a special music differentiation course in the 5th and 6th grades. The music school of the Cologne Cathedral Choir also cooperates with the Cathedral Singing School and offers lessons tailored to the particular level of performance and experience of the students.
