The Marienschule Opladen is a private Catholic high school in Leverkusen - Opladen sponsored by the Archdiocese of Cologne .
history
The school was founded in 1866 when Stephan Josef Krey, pastor at St. Remigius in Opladen and dean of the Solingen dean's office, called nuns from the Order of the Poor to Opladen to teach and teach girls in a building on Altstadtstraße To operate boarding school. In 1868 a new building was built for the school. Krey bequeathed the school to the parish; this was not allowed to inherit after Krey's death in 1873 due to the beginning of the Kulturkampf . It was initially acquired by Pastor Junkers, Krey's successor. In 1876, the school even had to be temporarily shut down. In 1888 the sisters took over the running of the school, in 1891 also the nursing in the newly opened St. Josef Hospital opposite the school (today Remigius Hospital). In 1897, with the death of Junkers, the school was transferred to the parish of St. Remigius.
In 1909 the school was converted into a lyceum. In 1910 a large new building was built. After a commercial school for girls was established in 1924 , the school became the Oberlyzeum ( girls' high school ) in 1927 . In 1929 and 1930 there were major renovations and extensions.
With the beginning of National Socialist rule, the city's grants to the school were canceled. The number of pupils has steadily decreased from the last 400 pupils, and since 1937 no new pupils have been admitted. In 1938 the business school was closed, and in 1940 the rest of the school too. A municipal school was set up in the Marienschule building.
After the Second World War , the school was reopened in October 1945, despite severe damage from an air raid on December 28, 1944, and grew steadily in the period that followed. The boarding school was closed in 1970. Boys have also been taught since 1975. In the same year, a modern extension was opened. In 1998 and 2002 conversions were made again. In 2007 a new gym was opened.
After the nuns had withdrawn from the school, the Archdiocese of Cologne took over the sponsorship on August 1, 1996.
today
Around 90 teachers teach around 1200 students in the Marienschule. This makes it the second largest grammar school in the Opladen district after the District Administrator Lucas grammar school . The Abitur can be taken after grade 12.
The school has partnerships with schools in France, Poland, Chile and England. Non-Catholic students are only admitted to a correspondingly limited quota.
