The Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium is located in Leverkusen - Lützenkirchen . It is one of over 200 MINT-EC schools in Germany. The school offers a mathematical and natural science as well as a German-French branch. It was named after the physicist and Nobel Prize winner Werner Heisenberg .

History and characteristics of the school

The Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium was created in 1976 by merging the Opladen District Administrator Lucas School II and the Ina Seidel School .

In 1989 a Franco-German branch was set up. The participating students are in their own class and have French as their first foreign language and an additional two hours of English. At the beginning of the 6th school year, students receive full English lessons as a second foreign language. In this year, there is also a mutual exchange with a partner school in Saint-Germain-en-Laye . In the following years, the subjects geography (from grade 7), history (from grade 8) and politics (from grade 9) are taught in French. With the French advanced course and history bilingually as the 3rd or 4th Abitur subject, the bilingual Abitur can also be achieved.

In 2000, a mathematical and scientific branch was introduced. At the time of the nine- grade grammar school (G9), the students received lessons in all three natural sciences, biology, physics and chemistry, as part of the MINT profile class in all grades of lower secondary school. In the meantime there is no longer such a profile class, but the pupils initially receive additional lessons in grade 5 in the so-called "MINT junior" subject, which is taught in class. From grade 7 onwards, there is the option of choosing two additional MINT hours for two years, in which the scientific interest is further encouraged. Alternatively, the so-called language profile can be chosen, which focuses on particularly creative work in the subjects of German and English. Both profiles are open to all students, including the bilingual class. The class group remains in place, the profile lessons are on a timeline in the timetable.

The school has had the RELAX bistro since 2007 , the name of which was suggested by students. It is run by parents on a voluntary basis.

With the introduction of the full day, a cafeteria was also set up in which freshly prepared dishes are offered using the "cook and chill" method. You can choose from three menus and the noodle bar every day. Orders are placed via an app that debits the money directly.

On May 12, 2010 the school was awarded the “Career Choice Seal”. It stands for the special support that the Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium gives to the students. Accordingly, the students of the Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium have a great decision-making aid when choosing a career.

building

The school building was built in 1976. In 1988 an outdoor sports facility was built to complement the triple sports hall. The construction of an annex began in 2009 and was inaugurated in January 2011. In the extension there are four new rooms for science lessons, in which the students can carry out experiments themselves. The collection was also enlarged and the equipment modernized (e.g. interactive whiteboards). In the course of the extension, the existing lecture halls and all of the former scientific practice rooms were renovated or converted. All rooms were given the same high standard of equipment as in the new building.

Furthermore, as a result of the extensive refurbishment, a spacious leisure area with kickers and air hockey was set up, which also includes the redesigned inner courtyard (not quite finished due to the season) and the canteen required for all-day operation.

The art and work rooms and finally the music rooms were also renovated in the other construction phases. A new addition is a keyboard lab, which enables students to experience and make music individually in regular music lessons with the help of keyboards and headphones.

At the moment (school year 2018/19) the school is undergoing extensive renovation. The structural changes, which were carried out in several stages, were co-developed by the staff and, in addition to fire protection aspects, also take into account educational concepts for the design and division of the rooms.

International high school diploma

Since the school year 2007/2008, the Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium has been one of 31 (as of 2007) schools in Germany that offer the International Baccalaureate and an IB World School due to a corresponding certification . However, the International Baccalaureate cannot be used as a substitute for the normal Abitur as this is not legally possible. This creates a double burden (Abitur and IB) for the students, which is also expressed in additional work. In addition, there is a restriction in the choice of subjects, as a maximum overlap of the requirements of the German Abitur and the IB reduces the workload again. In addition, a specially trained teacher is required for each subject that is to be taken in the International Baccalaureate. This additional qualification is achieved through advanced training that most of the teachers teaching at the IB have already received.

The choice of subjects is somewhat limited. The subjects of German, English, French, Spanish, history, mathematics, biology, chemistry and physics are available for the IB, although IB graduates can currently choose German and history not as advanced courses, but only as basic courses. Three of the six courses are to be taken as higher level courses , whereby the basic German course in combination with a two-hour World Literature is one of these three higher level courses. The advantage of this model is that it also covers the compulsory obligation of a subject from the field of art / music / literature for the German Abitur. The choice of advanced courses for the German Abitur has an impact on which standard level courses are still to be taken.

In all non-language subjects, students usually receive two additional hours per week, most of which are taught in English. In addition, the students must complete 150 CAS hours (Creativity / Activity / Social) as well as the subject Theory of Knowledge , which roughly corresponds to the subject philosophy and how this is evaluated in the German Abitur. In general, it should be noted that although there is an additional workload for the students, the additional lessons can also promote and improve performance in the German Abitur.

If the timetable allows it, the students are free to choose other subjects that are only relevant for the German Abitur. As a rule, however, this is not recommended in order not to unnecessarily increase the learning effort, ie the six examination subjects of the IB should include the four Abitur subjects.
