The Kardinal-Frings-Gymnasium ( KFG for short ; Archbishop's Gymnasium Beuel until 1979 ) is a private Catholic high school in the Limperich district of Bonn - Beuel . It is run independently by the Archdiocese of Cologne . The namesake and founder of the school is the Archbishop of Cologne, Josef Cardinal Frings . Around 850 students are currently being taught by around 60 teachers. The students come not only from all parts of Bonn, but also from the neighboring towns of Bad Honnef , Königswinter , Siegburg , Sankt Augustin , Troisdorf , Niederkassel and Cologne .
The KFG is part of the plot of the film The first name of Sönke Wortmann .
history
Foundation and construction
The initiative to found the school, then still called Archbishop's Gymnasium Beuel (EBG) , came from Josef Cardinal Frings at the end of the 1950s. Actually, a plot of land at Wichelshof in Bonn-Castell was planned, which the city of Bonn had selected in consultation with the archbishopric. Because there was disagreement in the Bonn council, the then still independent town of Beuel proposed the current property on the other side of the Rhine. The archbishopric gave up the preferred property in Bonn-Castell and bought the property on Elsa-Brändström-Strasse. The architect Joachim Schürmann was responsible for planning the building . The official start of construction was on June 10, 1963, and the first student registrations were received on November 1, 1963. Three months later the secretariat was set up in the Godesberg private apartment of the then headmaster Aloys Zillien . On April 9, 1964, the Archbishop's Gymnasium was opened in the Schwarzrheindorfer Doppelkirche . The lessons were initially given in Haus Michael in Schwarzrheindorf . On August 1, 1964, the school moved from Schwarzrheindorf to Beuel-Süd , where lessons took place in the buildings that were later used as teachers' apartments and were already designated as such at that time.
On December 15, 1964 the foundation stone of the school building was laid by Auxiliary Bishop Wilhelm Cleven . From Easter and June 1966, the main building and the administration wing were ready for occupancy. On June 21, 1966, Auxiliary Bishop Cleven consecrated the main building. The sports field was opened in the fall of 1967, followed by the swimming pool and gym a year later. On December 8, 1968, the school was inaugurated in the presence of Cardinal Frings. While 86 students in four classes were still attending the KFG at Easter 1964, in August 1968 there were 447, spread over 14 classes. From 1966, the school was no longer run with two classes per year, but with three. Today there are usually four. The grammar school was an all- boys school ; in 1970, in the presence of Cardinal Joseph Höffner, the first graduate class of the school with eight students was dismissed.
The KFG is the youngest school in the Archdiocese of Cologne and at the same time the only self-founded grammar school.
Renaming to Kardinal-Frings-Gymnasium
After the death of Cardinal Frings in 1978, the school, in consultation with the Archdiocese, decided to take the name of the founder. On December 8, 1979, the name was officially changed to Kardinal-Frings-Gymnasium by Archbishop Joseph Höffner as part of a ceremony to mark the opening of the extension.
Girls at the KFG
Advanced course cooperation
In the second half of 1985/86 an advanced course cooperation began with the Liebfrauenschule Bonn , and later also with the Sankt-Adelheid-Gymnasium in Pützchen . For the first time there were also female pupils at the KFG. At the end of the school year 1987/88, the first girls at the school were examined in the Abitur . The KFG has been cooperating with the two girls' schools to this day .
coeducation
From 1985 the question of co-education was taken up. At first it was feared that such a change in the school structure could endanger the existence of the nearby Sankt-Adelheid-Gymnasium. On July 3, 1986, the school conference submitted the first proposal, which was approved by the teachers' conference , the school caretaker and the parish council of the neighboring parish Heilig Kreuz . After a further application on May 27, 1987, the highest employer Joseph Höffner finally approved the introduction of co-education at the KFG on July 10, 1987. With the beginning of the 1988/89 school year, lessons at the KFG were held after long debates with girls and boys. Because the Sankt-Adelheid-Gymnasium is still an all girls' school, more boys than girls attend school to this day .
50 years of school
In 2014, the grammar school celebrated the founding of the school 50 years earlier with many events. It started with a festive service with Auxiliary Bishop Ansgar Puff on April 9, 50 years after the first day of school. The school previously took part in the Beuel women's carnival parade . The highlight was the cathedral pilgrimage on June 11th followed by a Rhine boat trip on the MS RheinEnergie back to Bonn, the project days on the following days and the anniversary patronage on June 14th. The anniversary year ended with the pontifical Vespers on December 16, 50 years after the foundation stone was laid for the school building, in the Heilig Kreuz school church with Archbishop Rainer Maria Cardinal Woelki , who had only recently been introduced to his office. The service was followed by a ceremony in the KFG auditorium. The speech was given by the former school chaplain and later Bishop of Mainz Peter Kohlgraf .

School grounds
The planning of the school grounds was one of the first major projects by star architect Joachim Schürmann , who later designed the Groß St. Martin church in Cologne and the Deutsche Welle radio station , known as Schürmann-Bau , in Bonn, and whose early designs were still popular at the time Brutalism can be attributed. The buildings with flat roofs, characterized by large exposed concrete surfaces, enormous wall thicknesses, gray-black floors and right angles, seem to be characterized by this style, which was initially slightly softened by the sometimes large window areas, but noticeably softened by later coloring and additions.
Due to the terraced location of the site facing the Rhine , the KFG is also referred to as a "learning landscape". The large sports area with artificial turf , running track , basketball court, two beach volleyball fields, throwing field and three sports halls is located directly on the Rhine . The former swimming pool was closed in 2010 due to high energy costs and a very expensive renovation that was required despite protests from some parents and converted into a gymnastics hall. There has been a flood protection wall facing the Rhine since 1996 after the sports field had been flooded several times in previous years . This holds back the water up to a Rhine level of 9.60 m.
A bridge leads from the sports area over Elsa-Brändström-Straße to the classrooms. The cafeteria , which was also designed by Schürmann, was completed in 2012 on the former terrace above the scientific wing . In contrast to the rest of the building, the cafeteria consists of very little concrete and offers a view of the Rhine through large windows.
Despite the massive construction made of exposed concrete, the building is flooded with light. There are several green light wells, floor-to-ceiling window cutouts and windows in the classrooms from two sides.
The school also has a large auditorium with a pipe organ and a recording studio . Shortly after completion, the school was considered one of the most modern in what was then the Federal Republic of Germany.
For a number of years there have been plans for an extensive renovation of the school. A time for this has not yet been set.
traffic
About one and a half kilometers away from the Kardinal-Frings-Gymnasium is the motorway junction Bonn-Ramersdorf of the A562 , which leads to the Konrad-Adenauer-Brücke , it is just as far to the B56 and the Kennedybrücke .
The two bus lines 606 and 607, which run every 20 minutes, stop right on the school premises and offer travel options to Ramersdorf in one direction and to Konrad-Adenauer-Platz and the main train station in the other. The KFG is connected to the Siebengebirgsbahn via the Limperich Nord stop, which is around 500 meters away , and the Beuel train station can be reached from the school in a few minutes by public transport.
School profile
Independent school
Although the KFG is a private school , no school fees are charged. Teachers have the same training as public high school teachers and the same performance requirements apply. Certificates and school-leaving qualifications are equivalent to those of public schools.
Religious profile
Pro hominibus constitutus - Ordered for the people
The motto of the school's founder, Josef Cardinal Frings, is also the school's motto.
School pastoral care
For the purpose of pastoral care, a school service is held three times a week for different classes and levels in the nearby Holy Cross Church . The school has its own school chaplain, who also works as a religion teacher. Other religious offers include early shifts, days of reflection, mediation and pilgrimages . In contrast to many state schools, religious instruction at the KFG must be attended continuously and cannot be replaced by philosophy, which is also taught at the school.
Rev. Andreas Haermeyer has been a school chaplain at the KFG since 2003, his predecessor was Peter Kohlgraf , who has been Bishop of Mainz since 2017.
Other denominations at the KFG
Although the KFG is a Catholic school, around 20% of the students are Protestant or belong to other denominations. There is an evangelical religion course per year. There are also regular ecumenical school services.
Classes
The KFG is usually in four parts. Due to the low number of registrations, only three new fifth classes were set up in 2012 and 2014, and after increasing numbers there were five new classes in 2015 and 2017. In the school year 2018/19 there are a total of 22 classes in lower secondary level I.
foreign languages
English
English is compulsory teaching at the KFG from the 5th to the 9th grade. In the upper level , the subject can be continued as a basic or advanced course.
Latin
In addition, specialized Latin must be assigned, either from class 6 (2nd foreign language) or directly from grade 5 (1st foreign language) at the end of the introductory period of school students at least adequate services get the Latinum (from the school year 2017/2018 for students with Latin as their first foreign language after the 9th grade). The subject can then be continued as a basic or advanced course.
French
In grades 8 and 9, French can be chosen as a further foreign language in addition to natural science and social science subject combinations . The French subject can also be continued in the upper level. There is also the possibility of obtaining the internationally recognized DELF diploma from the French Ministry of Education .
Spanish
In the upper level, Spanish can be taken as a new foreign language as a basic course.
Italian
There is an Italian language course on a voluntary basis for students from grade 9 .
STEM-friendly school
The KFG has entered into cooperation with regional companies in the so-called MINT subjects ( mathematics , computer science , natural sciences and technology ). These are: Steyler Ethik Bank (mathematics), amcm (computer science), Carl Zeiss (natural sciences) and Kautex Maschinenbau (technology). The school owns two fluorescence microscopes worth tens of thousands of euros that were donated by companies when they no longer needed them. In the field of natural sciences, the school is one of the best equipped schools in the region and is therefore also a base school for advanced chemistry training courses for the Cologne district government . Once a year the school organizes a primary school day, during which high school students experiment with primary school children and inspire them to learn about science.
The Kardinal-Frings-Gymnasium has been a MINT-friendly school since 2016 . The award took place on September 27th at the MNU Congress in Dortmund .
Live connection to the International Space Station ISS
On July 3, 2018 large school party to place on the sports grounds of the school horizons mission of the German ESA - astronaut Alexander Gerst instead. The highlight was a ten-minute live switch to Gerst, who answered the students' questions from the International Space Station . At that time, the space station was located directly above Bonn, which is why the period was limited. A total of ten radio contacts with schools are planned during Gerst's mission; they are part of the ARISS project and are carried out by the German Amateur Radio Club (DARC) and the German Aerospace Center (DLR). As part of the event, experiments and projects were presented that Gerst will carry out during his mission in space and that are being supervised by DLR. The guests include were NRW - Minister of Science Isabel Pfeiffer-Poensgen , Member of Parliament Guido Déus , former astronaut Reinhold Ewald and DLR Executive Walther Pelzer .
Cambridge English Exam Preparation Center
The Kardinal-Frings-Gymnasium was recognized as a Cambridge English Exam Preparation Center by the University of Cambridge in 2016. The award was given because an outstanding number of pupils passed the exams for Cambridge certificates , which the KFG is one of the very few schools to conduct itself.
Bilingual teaching
As part of the differentiation area, students in grades 8 and 9 can choose a combination of social science subjects ( politics , history and geography ) in English in addition to natural science subjects and French . In addition, there is currently a bilingual religion course in level 10.
social commitment
Armenia project
Beginnings
In 2001 the school wanted to realize the ordination of the school founder Cardinal Frings ( Pro hominibus constitutus - for the people ) through its own school project apart from the major aid organizations . It was clear that children should be helped in a country that is not directly in the focus of the well-known aid organizations. The choice finally fell on the Caucasian Republic of Armenia . Reasons for the choice were the long Christian tradition of Armenia as the first Christian country on earth, the genocide of the Armenians and the complicity of the German Empire in this, as well as the earthquake in Armenia in 1988 . For the latter reason, the project concentrates on northern Armenia, especially the Shirak region and its capital, Gyumri . The two partner schools, the Charenz School and the Tumanyan School are located there.
The official start of the project was the handing over of an Armenian Bible to the then Archbishop of Cologne, Cardinal Meisner, during his visit to the KFG in 2002.
Mini marathon
The mini-marathon run is held every autumn, in which the students look for sponsors before the run, who rewards each lap they run. The money raised will be used for the KFG projects in Armenia. In this way, more than 250,000 euros have been raised since the start of the project in 2002. (As of December 2017)
Promotion of German lessons
Part of the money will be used to procure teaching materials for the German lessons of the two partner schools in Gyumri as well as additional German lessons . There are also grants for the examination fees for the Goethe-Institut's German certificates .
Student exchange
Since 2002, a tour group from the school consisting of students , teachers and parents has traveled to Armenia every two years to see the supported projects on site and to get to know the country. The students sometimes live with host families on site and have to pay for the entire trip themselves. In return, groups of pupils from Armenia and their teachers have been visiting host families in Bonn every two years since 2004 in order to improve their German. Because the students of the two partner schools cannot pay the travel expenses, they are financed by donations from the mini marathon.
Until 2008, the KFG had another partner school in the Armenian capital Yerevan , the Mesrop-Mashtots-School, whose students could, however, pay for the flight tickets themselves. For this reason the credibility of the project suffered, which is why the school partnership was terminated.
Aid projects with Caritas Armenia
Most of the money will be used for construction projects at village schools in the Shirak region , which are carried out in cooperation with Caritas Armenia. Caritas suggests projects between which those responsible at the KFG then decide. Caritas takes care of the planning and construction so that the funds are used properly. As a rule, all supported projects are visited by a KFG travel group, either before or after the construction work is carried out. For the mostly small rural schools , this is often a big event for which students and teachers spend weeks preparing. A total of around 60 Armenian schools received help. Initially, it was small donations in kind, later larger structural measures such as roof renovations, new toilets or sports facilities. The project is carried out at Caritas Armenia under the name German Friendship .
For a number of years it also supported container families who had to live under catastrophic conditions.
Importance of the project
The project is very important to the people involved in Armenia. For the exchange students , the trip to Germany is a unique opportunity and is often associated with a lot of hope. 40 former students from the two partner schools have started to study German , some of them also studied in Germany. The support is also special for the subsidized village schools because they receive little or no funding from the government.
The KFG is the only school in Germany with a longer Armenian school partnership and the only one whose project was not initiated by the two governments. The project is very well known in the city of Gyumri and the surrounding area. Since taking office in the summer of 2015, the Armenian ambassador to Germany Aschot Smbatjan has been a regular guest in Beuel. At a diplomatic reception on the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Germany and Armenia in September 2017 in Berlin, the ambassador highlighted the KFG's Armenia project as an excellent example of cultural cooperation. In addition, there is close contact with the Association of Armenian Women in Germany Silva Kaputikian eV from Cologne . 2013 commemorated the common genocide , 2,014 attended a German-Armenian group, the football - international match Germany - Armenia in Mainz . Because of his many years of personal commitment to the Armenia project, Werner Blume, the initiator of the project, was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon by Bonn's Lord Mayor Ashok Sridharan on December 22, 2015 , and in 2017 he received the gold medal of honor from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Armenia. Due to the long Eastern European partnership, the nationwide opening of the Renovabis Whitsun campaign took place in the school auditorium on May 12, 2017 .
KFG helps
In the course of the refugee crisis , the school decided to initiate a new aid project to help people in the region. KFG helps was presented at the 2016 patronage and is primarily intended to support refugees. The money is earned at an annual social work day for the students. On November 10, 2017, the student council presented Peter Kohlgraf , the Bishop of Mainz and former KFG school litter, with a check for € 2,000 for refugee aid in the diocese of Mainz on the occasion of his visit .
Cardinal Frings Social Award
Since 2009, on the occasion of the patronage , the Friends' Association has awarded the KFG Social Prize every year to groups or individuals who particularly stand out through their social commitment at the school.
Previous projects
There have been social campaigns since 1969. The students sold z. B. Christmas trees , raised money and participated in hunger marches for the needy. In 2010 there was a large fundraising campaign for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti , in which the partner schools in Armenia also participated.
Music and theater
music
Forum instrumentals
Every week instrumental teachers come to the school to give lessons to the students. Almost all musical instruments are taught. There is also the possibility of borrowing an instrument from the school. The aim is to attract young people to the school's orchestras in this way .
Every year the Forum Instrumentale organizes the spring concert on the promenade on Mother's Day , and the Christmas concert on the Saturday of the 3rd Advent weekend. Power up the door in the school auditorium.
orchestra
The musical flagship of the school is the symphonic wind orchestra with around 100 musicians, which was founded in 1982 by music teacher Andreas Berger. It is the largest orchestra in a school in Bonn. There has also been a chamber orchestra since 1986 . The orchestras play at school events such as the patronage or the open house, but also represent the school in carnival parades , St. Martin's parades , Corpus Christi processions or concerts in Bonn's Minster . On June 1, 1996, the band during football match played Germany - France , the national anthems , on 27 August 2017 under episcopal ordination of the former school chaplain Peter Kohlgraf on the Mainzer marketplace .
Bands
In 2004 the rock-pop band Lemon Dust was founded. In addition, Erhard Rau, instrumental teacher at the school and trumpeter at Köbes Underground , founded the brass & marching band Querbeat from the school's big band in 2001 , which has played in the Cologne carnival since 2007 and achieved nationwide fame through songs like Nie mehr Fastelovend and Tschingderassabum . Rau also founded the brass & performance band compressed air , which also started as a KFG school band and has been active in the carnival since 2014, as well as the brass band Knallblech.
theatre
Since the school year 1999/2000 the literature course Q1 to stage under the name Cardinal Frings theater plays on. In 2015, the group won the Bonn Kobold at the school theater festival Spotlight of the Junge Theatergemeinde Bonn with the production of the play The Last Days of Mankind by Karl Kraus .
The English Drama Group has existed since 2009 and plays plays in English.
Working groups
media
Since the school year 2012/13 there has been a film group at the Kardinal-Frings-Gymnasium. The pupils produce short films and documentaries about events and projects at the school and publish them on the school website. Well-known interview partners included Rainer Maria Cardinal Woelki , Ansgar Puff , Aschot Smbatjan and Peter Kohlgraf .
Since 1998 the school has had a radio project course called Frings on Air . The radio broadcasts are recorded in a recording studio set up in 1968 and renovated in 1996 in the basement of the school building. Under the direction of Muriel Kasper, Martina Kurth (teacher) and Daniel Kramarz (producer), the members of the project course conduct interviews with often prominent personalities, career ideas and topics from the Bonn region . Every second Sunday of the month, Frings on Air can be heard at 8:30 p.m. on Radio Bonn / Rhein-Sieg .
Social
In 1997 the school medical service was founded. Around 50 schoolchildren trained as first aiders provide first aid in emergencies . In addition, they are always available during breaks and at school events.
The mediators help with disputes and also take over the class sponsorship for the new 5th grades.
The Umwelt-AG takes care of campaigns for environmental protection , e.g. B. the introduction of recycled paper , greening of the school grounds , recycling of cell phones or the deposit box, where the proceeds of discarded deposit bottles are donated.
Since January 2018 there has been a social working group at the school, in which students help out one hour a week in a social institution and carry out other joint social projects.
Sports
The school currently has running , dancing , basketball and soccer clubs.
Support association
In 1973 the friends' association of the school (friends, sponsors and alumni of the Kardinal-Frings-Gymnasium Bonn - Beuel eV) was founded, which financially supports actions and projects. This includes the acquisition of teaching materials such as experiment kits , books and chemicals , but also the improvement of the technical equipment of the KFG with laptops , tablet computers , projectors and whiteboards . The orchestras , the theater and the working groups also receive support. For many years, the development association ran the school's cafeteria. In addition to financial help, the Friends' Association awards the Cardinal Frings Social Prize every year .
successes
In both internal and external competitions, students achieve top places every year. These include B. the German Chemistry Olympiad and the Mathematics Olympiad . In the HEUREKA! Weltkunde and HEUREKA! People and nature regularly achieved 1st place at the federal and state level. In 2012 and 2014, the advanced social sciences course won the Chef for One Day competition . In 2016, a group of schoolchildren won the regional decision for North Rhine-Westphalia in the Business @ School competition of the Boston Consulting Group and were allowed to go to the national finals in Munich .
The school is also very successful in terms of sport: in 2009, the pupil Felix Krane became Junior World Champion in rowing with the Germany eighth . In 2010, the KFG school relay achieved first places in both the RheinEnergie-Marathon Bonn and the Cologne Marathon . In 2011 the title was defended in Bonn and thus the overall victory in the RheinCup classification . In 2017, the KFG was again the best school in Bonn at the Bonn Marathon . The B-youth footballers became city champions in 2017.
