Konrad-Adenauer-Platz (Bonn)
The Konrad-Adenauer-Platz is a square in the Beuel-Mitte district of the city of Bonn on the right bank of the Rhine . It is named after the former German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer .
Location and traffic
The square is in a central location near the banks of the Rhine and is intersected by Bundesstraße 56 (St. Augustiner Straße) and Landesstraße 83 (Friedrich-Breuer-Straße). The driveway of the B56 onto the Kennedy Bridge begins here . The Limpericher Strasse, Rheindorfer Strasse and Von-Sandt-Strasse walk towards the square. There are bus stops and a tram stop for the Siegburger Bahn (towards Siegburg and Bonn-Mitte) and a tram stop for the Siebengebirgsbahn (towards Oberkassel and Bonn-Mitte). On the edge of the square is the Beuel town hall, which has housed the district administration office since it was incorporated. In the vicinity there are mainly catering establishments, small shops and a larger branch of Sparkasse KölnBonn .
history
From 1907 to 1934, Brückenstraße ran in place of the square. Between 1934 and 1945 the square was called Adolf-Hitler-Platz , from 1945 onwards Beueler Platz and from 1956 to 1967 Friedrich-Ebert-Platz; after Adenauer's death it was renamed in honor of the former Federal Chancellor. The north-west corner of the square (Sankt Augustiner Straße) forms a building complex that began uncoordinated as a single-storey row of shops in 1954–56 and was completed in 1961 with a five-storey increase and connected to one another. In January 2004, the previously common tram and tram stop, which was located in the foreland area of the Kennedy Bridge in front of the junction towards Siegburg and Oberkassel, was abandoned and replaced by two new stops in Sankt Augustiner Straße and Friedrich-Breuer-Straße. At the same time, the street areas of the square were also rebuilt, as was the entire course of Bundesstraße 56 in the center of Beuel. The renovation work cost around 1.8 million euros. Traffic lights and the surrounding street furniture were also replaced. The client was the city of Bonn.
Attempts were made again and again to build on the adjacent open space between town hall and town hall square, but several investor proceedings remained unsuccessful. In the course of an architects' competition in 2007, suggestions were to be drawn up that should also provide for a redesign of the square, which many felt to be desolate. In 2011, a usage concept for the open space known as Rathauseck was presented, and the winning design of the architectural competition was finally implemented. A supermarket, a pharmacy and a health center were built in the new building - collectively referred to as the “Beuel Specialist Center”. The existing open space was framed by two buildings and raised to a plateau that opens onto Konrad-Adenauer-Platz. After preparatory development measures from January 2012, construction began in July 2012, and the new building should be completed at the end of 2015 after several delays.
