Ashok-Alexander Sridharan (born June 15, 1965 in Bonn ) is a German local politician ( CDU ). The lawyer was elected Lord Mayor of the Federal City of Bonn on September 13, 2015 . He took up his post on October 21, 2015.

Life

Sridharan's father Doraswamy comes from the south of India and came to Germany as a diplomat in 1957; his mother Margret comes from Bonn- Lengsdorf . From 1969 to 1981 he lived in Frankfurt am Main . He passed his Abitur in 1985 at the Aloisiuskolleg in Bonn- Bad Godesberg . He studied law at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn ; He completed his legal clerkship at the Bonn Regional Court . After the second state examination in law, he worked for six months as a lawyer in the district administration of the Rhein-Sieg district . From 1996 to 2015 Sridharan was employed by the city of Königswinter . In 2002 the city council of Königswinter elected him first alderman and treasurer . Until 2010 he was also head of the department for finance, schools, sports, culture and town twinning. From 2010 to 2015 Sridharan was Deputy Mayor of Königswinter and Head of Finance, Human Resources, Organization, IT and Controlling.

The Bonn CDU nominated him in November 2014 as a candidate for the office of Lord Mayor. On September 13, 2015, he won the mayoral election in Bonn, which took place in the course of the 2015 municipal elections in North Rhine-Westphalia . In the first ballot, Sridharan was elected to succeed Jürgen Nimptsch ( SPD ) with 50.06 percent of the vote (with 45.1 percent turnout in Bonn) . His opponent Peter Ruhenstroth-Bauer (SPD) received 23.7 percent of the vote. The Green candidate Tom Schmidt received 22.1 percent. The remaining 4.1 percent were split between three other applicants. In the meantime, he has announced that he will run again in the mayoral election in 2020. Sridharan was nominated accordingly at the district party conference of the CDU Bonn in November 2019.

Sridharan is Catholic and married. He and his wife Petra have three sons. From 1998 he lived in his own house in Bornheim-Widdig . From 1999 to 2004 Sridharan headed the CDU local association Hersel - Uedorf - Widdig . In 2015, shortly before the mayor's election, he moved to Bonn- Röttgen .
