Leopold Kaufmann
Leopold Ernst Kaufmann (also Kauffmann ; born March 13, 1821 in Bonn ; † February 27, 1898 ibid) was the deputy district administrator in the Zell (Mosel) district from May 1850 to March 1851 and mayor of Bonn from 1851 to 1875 .
Life
He was the son of the civil servant Franz Wilhelm August Nepomuk Kaufmann and his wife Maria Josefine Maximiliane von Pelzer. One of his brothers was Alexander Kaufmann .
He came from a respected family in Bonn, whose ancestors had held important offices in the city and in Cologne's electoral state. As a child he received music lessons from Johanna Kinkel and took part in her little music circles. During his studies he became a member of the Fridericia Bonn fraternity in 1843 . After completing a law degree at Bonn University, he first worked as a government employee in Konstanz . This was followed by a time as district administrator and acting mayor in Koblenz . Later he was district administrator of the Zell an der Mosel district and was finally elected mayor of Bonn in October 1850 . He took office in May 1851. In 1859 he received the title of Lord Mayor . He held the office until 1875. He particularly showed a lot of initiative to beautify the city. The renovation of the Rhine front with the construction of the Rhine promenade goes back to him. In 1859 he bought a theater building for the city and got the job of a paid music director. He took care of the construction of the sewer system and the paving of the streets. He has rendered particular services to the restoration of the Bonn Minster .
He was a member of the Prussian mansion and the author of several art historical writings.
His grave is in Bonn's old cemetery . Kaufmannstrasse in the Endeich district has been named after him since 1902.
