Life

Von Stein was a son of the Cologne Commercial Council and co-owner of the private banking house JH Stein Johann Heinrich von Stein (1832-1911) and his wife Elise Maria ( Marie ) von Mevissen (1847-1936). He first attended the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Cologne, where he passed his school leaving examination at Easter in 1892. He then began to study law, first in Lausanne , then in Munich and Bonn and finally at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg . In 1896 he received his doctorate finally in Erlangen Dr. jur. with his dissertation "The Nature of Buying on Trial and the Practical Significance of Different Views" . After his first legal examination, which he had passed on June 13, 1896, his first jobs followed in Gummersbach , Cologne, Waldbröl , Potsdam , Herford and again in Cologne.

On December 21, 1909 he was appointed provisional district administrator for the Zell an der Mosel district. However, he did not take office until January 6, 1910, which was finally followed by the final appointment on June 12, 1910.

“At Christmas 1909 my husband received the news that he had been appointed District Administrator of the Zell district and that he would take up this post in January. This made his wish to become district administrator in West Germany come true - and so I drove to the Moselle with great enthusiasm. "

After the Moselle floods in November 1910, when the recently installed central heating in the district building had failed and the district administrator had even fallen into the water while being transported from a boat, the family decided to move. For this purpose, they had a mansion built in Burg on the Moselle after 1910 , which they named "Castle Castle" and which is now used as the registry office of the Traben-Trarbach community .

As ill of stone, it was in the period 1916-1918 from Simmerner Ökonomierat Dr. Karl Franz Heiser (1870–1930) represented. Following an initiative by Stein's, both the Briedeler Heck settlement and the district's own teaching and experimental winery, Sonneck, were founded in Bullay . In order to meet the additional need for office space, the district administration building was increased at his instigation. He also had a youth and public library with 4,000 books set up and the Kreissparkasse building was rebuilt between 1928 and 1929.

After the NSDAP came to power in 1933, von Stein ran into difficulties with the party, as a result of which he was given early retirement on February 1, 1935 due to a serious hearing impairment. In an appreciative review, von Stein's achievements were reflected in the political change of the time of the First World War and its post-war years, the Weimar Republic and the beginning of the rule of National Socialism . In accordance with his achievements and merits for his 25 years of activity as District Administrator of the Zell district, Gustav von Stein was awarded the Cross of Merit 1st Class in 1952 on the occasion of his 80th birthday.
