Franz Alexander Kaufmann , also Kauffmann , (born May 14, 1817 in Bonn , † May 1, 1893 in Wertheim ) was a German writer and archivist .

Life

He was the son of the civil servant Franz Wilhelm August Nepomuk Kaufmann and his wife Maria Josefine Maximiliane von Pelzer. One of his brothers was Leopold Kaufmann .

Kaufmann studied law at the University of Bonn from 1838 without being able to obtain a degree. From 1850 he worked as an archivist for Prince von Löwenstein in Wertheim .

Marriage to the writer Mathilde Binder

On May 10, 1857, he married Mathilde Kunigunde Amalia Caroline Binder (1835–1907) from Nuremberg. She was active as a writer and wrote under the name "Amara George".

Works

As a historian, Kaufmann is important because of his source research on legends and Caesarius von Heisterbach . But he also published many articles on Franconian history. He also published poems. At the beginning of the 20th century, Meyer's large conversation lexicon said: "Kaufmann is one of the Rhineland's favorite poets. His heartfelt, fresh and joyful poetry was published under the titles:" Gedichte "(1852)," Mainsagen "(1853; the "source information" 1862) and "Unter den Veben" (1871) ".
