The Carl-von-Ossietzky-Gymnasium (short: CvO ) is an all-day school with an artistic , musical and scientific focus in the Bonn district of Ückesdorf . The namesake is Carl von Ossietzky . The school has up to four parallel classes in each year, a total of approx. 780 students , 70 teachers , 8 trainees , a librarian , two school secretaries and a caretaker . In the past few years, between 60 and 100 high school graduates left school in one year.

The school grounds, which are around 40,000 square meters in size and adjoining a forest, have, among other things, a basketball court , a beach volleyball facility, a cinder track , a long jump facility as well as two sports halls and a barbecue area. The school also runs its own school garden , which is taken care of by a working group of students and teachers.

In addition to the usual furnishings with normal classrooms, the Carl-von-Ossietzky-Gymnasium has two music, chemistry, physics and biology rooms. There are also two computer rooms. These are equipped with networked workstations for classroom teaching. Other computer workstations with Internet access are located in the self-study center , which has been open since May 2003 and is available for free use. After the renovation work, each classroom now has several Internet access points. In addition, the subject rooms also have computers connected to the Internet and computer workstations for the students. A physics room and a biology room each have rising rows of seats, similar to a small lecture hall , with a permanently installed video projector .

The auditorium burned down completely on May 24, 2010 for an unknown cause, with the roof structure collapsing. It has since been rebuilt.

Redevelopment

In 2005 and 2006 the building was completely renovated due to excessive PCB pollution. The building was completely gutted and new school furniture was purchased. During the renovation, lessons continued in containers that were erected in front of the school auditorium. Following the renovation, the building was reopened on March 31, 2006 in a small ceremony by Bonn's then Lord Mayor Bärbel Dieckmann .

Self-learning center

The Carl-von-Ossietzky-Gymnasium has a so-called self -study center . This is a facility that combines the student library, media center, internet station and breastfeeding room in one facility, which is continuously looked after by a qualified librarian and a teacher as well as volunteer parents (as of 2015).

In order to simplify the search for individual media units, the Carl-von-Ossietzky-Gymnasium works with an online library catalog (OPAC allegro-c), which can be accessed from any computer in the school. There is also a copy option for students there.

history

The Carl-von-Ossietzky-Gymnasium was opened in 1964 under the name Gymnasium Bonn-Röttgen . In 1989 the school was opened in a ceremony in the presence of Federal Chancellor a. D. Willy Brandt renamed after Carl von Ossietzky . The name honors Ossietzky's journalistic work during the Weimar Republic and his fight against National Socialism .

All day school

The Carl-von-Ossietzky-Gymnasium was the first officially approved and state-recognized all-day school in the Cologne district , whose all-day operation has been in operation since the 1991/92 school year. At that time, it served as a pilot project to test full-day operation at high schools. For the classes of lower secondary level, the afternoon lessons take place on different days. Some of the upper-level courses also take place in the afternoon.

During the lunch break it is possible to have warm meals. At the same time, there is afternoon care where homework help is offered in the so-called self-study center.

Since the 2014/2015 school year, high-learning students in grades 5 have been able to choose Spanish as a preferred second foreign language in addition to English. Those who only start the second foreign language in grade 6 have the choice between French and Latin. These two languages ​​will be offered again in grade 8, with Spanish for beginners again in the introductory phase of the upper secondary school.

Since the federal city of Bonn is a twin town of the English city of Oxford , the school choir of the Carl-von-Ossietzky-Gymnasium takes a choir tour there every two years. In addition to numerous appearances at school events, the choir has already been heard several times at other events, for example exhibition openings and events in the federal city of Bonn. One of the highlights in choral history so far was a concert at the United Nations in New York. There is also a school orchestra and several bands at the Carl-von-Ossietzky-Gymnasium . Many students at the Carl-von-Ossietzky-Gymnasium have already successfully taken part in the national youth music competition.

In 2004, the art department of the Carl-von-Ossietzky-Gymnasium organized an experimental literary-musical-artistic project on the subject of neighborhoods in cooperation with the cultural office of the Federal City of Bonn and together with the departments of music and German , in which professionals worked together with talented students . As part of this project, an art exhibition was opened in the school auditorium on March 24, 2004. a. Lord Mayor Bärbel Dieckmann was also present. In this exhibition all of the student works could be viewed. The best work was then awarded at a ceremony to mark the 40th school anniversary.

The resulting works were also presented from November 10, 2004 to November 19, 2004 as part of the school's learning partnership with T-Mobile Germany in a vernissage entitled "Neighborhoods - communicating without borders" in the "T-Mobile City" forum , the headquarters of T-Mobile Germany.

In 2005, the art department also took part in the “Beethoven Bonnensis” project run by the “Citizens for Beethoven” association. With this project, the “Citizens for Beethoven” are committed to increasing child and youth work within the framework of the Beethoven Festival. Schoolchildren and students from Bonn were given the opportunity to present the results of their preoccupation with the memory, life and work of Ludwig van Beethoven to a wider public. Therefore, some selected students from the Carl-von-Ossietzky-Gymnasium exhibited their works as part of this project at a vernissage in the Hardtberg cultural center .
