The Helmholtz-Gymnasium Bonn is a public high school with a German-English- bilingual branch and a natural science branch in Bonn - Duisdorf .
School history
The Helmholtz grammar school was opened in 1961 under the direction of Wilhelm Schüttler as the grammar school of the Duisdorf office. A year later it was officially named after Hermann von Helmholtz . The school building was based on a design by the Düsseldorf architect Bruno Lambart , while the landscaping and sports facilities were designed by the Bonn garden architect Heinrich Raderschall . The school was decisively shaped from 1976 to 1990 by its headmaster Leo Klingen. Since the school year 2000/2001, in addition to the Abitur, he has been awarded the Dr. Leo Klingen Prize to students who have distinguished themselves in particular through academic achievements or social commitment. From 1990 to 2012 the grammar school was directed by Martin Berg. Dorothee von Hoerschelmann has been the headmaster since 2013.
School profile
Profiles
Bilingual branch
In the test level, the students receive English lessons with an increased number of five instead of four hours per week in order to have the opportunity to continue a bilingual school career at the end of the 6th grade. At lower secondary level , geography and history are taught in English. All students in the bilingual branch take part in a trip to England in the seventh grade ; a study trip in the ninth grade is optional.
For the bilingual certificate, geography or history must be taken as a bilingual subject in the qualification phase, which is then part of the Abitur examination. In the qualification phase of the upper secondary level there is the possibility of taking the International Baccalaureate (IB) in addition to the German Abitur .
Scientific branch
In contrast to the bilingual branch, there are two additional physics lessons in the seventh grade , and one additional chemistry lesson each in the eighth grade . This corresponds to the additional lessons in the bilingual subject from the bilingual branch. High-performing students can also take for Ford AGs in the areas of English and natural sciences. Support modules support low-performing students.
Language sequence
From the test level, English is the first foreign language, from the sixth grade onwards, you can choose between Latin or French as a second foreign language. The choice of a third foreign language is possible from the eighth grade. Depending on the choice of the second foreign language, Latin or French can be chosen. As an alternative to a third language, math / computer science or natural sciences can also be chosen. In addition, students in upper secondary level can choose Spanish and, from the 2009/2010 school year, Chinese as a new foreign language.
Central courses
In the artistic field, the school offers central advanced courses in music and art. They take place at one of the participating high schools, as long as there are enough interested parties for the corresponding course. The advanced music course has been held alternately at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Gymnasium and the Helmholtz-Gymnasium since 1998 .
Cooperation with other grammar schools
The Helmholtz-Gymnasium cooperates with the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Gymnasium and the Hardtberg-Gymnasium in order to expand the combination possibilities of the advanced courses . If there are not enough interested parties at your own school to set up your own course in a certain subject, there is the possibility of offering a course in cooperation with the other school.
Special activities
The Helmholtz-Gymnasium has a school choir, a school orchestra, a musical group and a theater group. There are numerous collaborations with extracurricular institutions. A regular cooperation exists u. a. with the Bonn-based Deutsche Post and the Sparkasse KölnBonn .
