Fastway was born in New Zealand in April 1983 from the idea of providing a cost effective hourly pickup and delivery service between two cities in New Zealand (Napier and Hastings).

Since April 1984 , the company has licensed a large number of franchisees to expand the service. As a result, the company grew rapidly.

In 1986 Fastway founder Bill McGowan was named New Zealand Entrepreneur of the Year.

In 1993 , Fastway Couriers expanded to Australia after doing market research on site for over a year and seeing that the market could also be opened up here.

In 1999, Fastway decided to expand worldwide and offered so-called "national franchises" to suitable candidates who could implement and manage the Fastway business for an entire country. In 2002 Fastway also came to Germany with the franchise system and opened up the southern part of Germany within five years.

After 8 years of development work in Germany, Fastway Couriers Deutschland GmbH filed for bankruptcy in April 2010 and thus lost its license. The German sub-licensees continue their business or consequently also had to file for bankruptcy. Today the Fastway Franchise Couriers System still exists in New Zealand, Australia, Great Britain, Ireland, South Africa and partly in Germany.

Fastway Couriers was initially represented in Canada, Morocco, Malaysia, Portugal, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Germany and Spain, but closed the branches again. A total of around (?) 1500 franchisees are currently active, in Germany there are now around 50. At times in Germany (according to information from the former National Masters to the German Franchise Association), over 300 people were under contract as franchisees Bankruptcy lost their jobs and their invested capital / assets.
