Mile High Club

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mile High Club , or MHC for short , is the slang term for the group of people who have had sex with a partner on board an aircraft in flight . Ideally, the altitude above ground should be at least one nautical mile , i.e. 1852 meters. There is no actual club of this kind.

history

Curtiss Flying Boat (Curtiss H12) 1916, seats four people

The first two members of the Mile High Club are the pilot and designer Lawrence Sperry and Dorothy Rice Sims , who was married to the artist Waldo Pierce at the time, who allegedly had sex together in November 1916 and "acquired" their memberships, as Lawrence Sperry tested a self-designed autopilot during a flight in a Curtiss Flying Boat over New York .

The American traffic authority NTSB is aware of at least one case in which sexual acts on board a sport aircraft were at least partly responsible for an aircraft accident.

In November 2007 the BBC reported on a measure by Singapore Airlines . After the launch of its new Airbus A380, the airline asked its first-class passengers to show consideration for other passengers. The twelve first-class compartments offer a double bed, but are not soundproof. In 2015, air passengers in Stockholm found out about a new membership via loudspeaker announcement. After landing, the steward sarcastically congratulated a couple on their successful reproduction.

Others

In the meantime, several small companies offer flights in specially equipped aircraft, which make it possible to obtain membership discreetly.

The Mile High Club is best known among flight crews. Since the term Mile High Club is not legally protected, it is sometimes used as a motto for exuberant celebrations by flight personnel. There are also clubs and bars that use this or a very similar name.

A dry gin called Mile High 69 , which was named after the club, has been produced in Hagnau am Bodensee since 2017 .
