Aschot Smbatjan ( Armenian Աշոտ Սմբատյանը , also Ashot Smbatyan ; born April 30, 1969 in Yerevan ) is an Armenian diplomat ; he has been the Armenian ambassador to Germany since July 2015 .

Life

In 1985 he began studying mathematics at the Yerevan State University . This was interrupted from 1987 to 1988 by his military service. He continued his mathematics studies in Yerevan from 1988 to 1990 and then moved to the Technical University of Dresden from 1990 to 1991 with a grant from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) . He graduated from Yerevan with honors in 1991. This was followed by a dual doctoral degree at the University of Leipzig until 1993 , where he also worked for Siemens . He completed a second degree from 1993 to 1997 in economics at the Humboldt University in Berlin . During his economics studies, he was a tutor in the mathematics faculty at Humboldt University . He received further training in 2002 at the Foreign Service Academy in Berlin.

Ashot Smbatjan is married and has two children.

Diplomatic career

At the Armenian embassy in Berlin , he was first personal assistant to the ambassador from 1999 to 2008, then head of the embassy chancellery. After returning to Armenia in 2009, he was a consultant in the Diaspora Department of the Armenian Foreign Ministry. From 2011 to 2013 he was 1st Secretary in the Europe Department. In 2014 he returned to Berlin and was first counselor at the embassy , then permanent representative and then chargé d'affaires .

Since July 2015 he has been the Ambassador of Armenia to Germany with the rank of Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary. The appointment came on May 19, 2015 after the predecessor Wahan Howhannisjan died after illness. In 2018, Aschot Smbatjan was co-accredited as ambassador for Liechtenstein .
