Mutton Island ( Irish Inis Caorach ) is a small island about one kilometer south of the coast between Galway and Salthill in County Galway in Ireland .
The island is connected to the mainland by a causeway from Claddagh . On the uninhabited island there is a lighthouse and a sewage treatment plant . The island is usually only visited by the workers at the sewage treatment plant. After the treatment, the wastewater is pumped into the sea.
The island is closed to the public for most of the year.
