Pyxidanthera barbulata is one of two species of the genus Pyxidanthera in the family of Diapensiaceae . They are endemic to eastern North America.
features
Pyxidanthera barbulata is an evergreen, creeping subshrub . Its sessile leaves are awl-shaped.
The sessile single flowers arise from short, leafy branches. The petals are fused into a tube by means of the wide stamens of the stamens . The anthers are double-sided and open across, pollen is only released when the tip of the anthers is pressed down. Staminodes are absent. The stylus is as long as the corolla tube.
Systematics and occurrence
The genus was first described by André Michaux in 1803 . Phylogenetically , it forms the sister taxon to a clade of Berneuxia , Shortia and Diapensia .
The genus Pyxidanthera includes two species:
- Pyxidanthera barbulata Michx. : The leaves are 3.5-10 millimeters long. It is located in eastern North America in New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.
- Pyxidanthera brevifolia Wells (Syn .: Pyxidanthera barbulata Michaux var. Brevifolia (Wells) HE Ahles ): It has leaves that are only 2-4 millimeters long. It occurs only in a small area in North Carolina and South Carolina. Both types occur in this area.
