The winter leaves ( Shortia ) are a genus of plants from the Diapensiaceae family . It includes only six species, five of which are native to East Asia.

Winter leaves are low-growing, perennial herbaceous plants that form dense clumps or carpets and reproduce vegetatively through their rhizomes ; their leaves are long-stalked.
The nodding flowers are solitary or in clusters, bracts on the peduncle are present. The petals are fused, their lobes wavy or notched. The strongly inwardly curved stamens have two counters , near the base of the petals are the staminodes . The stylus is long and thread-shaped.

In addition to the five species in eastern Asia, there is another species in eastern North America ( Shortia galacifolia ).
Systematics and botanical history
The genus was first described in 1842 by John Torrey and Asa Gray . Since Constantine S. Rafinesque-Schmaltz had already used the name for a genus within the cruciferous family two years earlier , the name was preserved in the ICBN (nom. Cons.). The six types include:
- Galaxial winter leaf ( Shortia galacifolia Torr. & A. Gray ); it occurs only in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Tennessee.
- Shortia rotundifolia (Maxim.) Makino ; it occurs in Taiwan at altitudes from 1000 to 3000 meters and in Japan on the Ryūkyū Islands .
- Shortia sinensis Hemsl. ; it occurs only in southeastern Yunnan at altitudes of 1000 to 2000 meters.
- Alpine bell-like winter leaf ( Shortia soldanelloides (Siebold & Zucc.) Makino , syn .: Schizocodon soldanelloides Siebold & Zucc. ); it only occurs in Japan.
- Single-flowered winter leaf ( Shortia uniflora Maxim. ); it occurs only in Japan (Honshu).
