Greater Taung ( English Greater Taung Local Municipality ) is a local municipality in the district Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality of the province of North West in South Africa .

The community name comes from the Setswana and literally means "place of the lion ", more precisely: "place of the traditional head Tau" of the Barolong tribe .

In 2011 the community had 177,642 inhabitants. 98.2% of these were black and 1% colored .

89.9% of the first language was Setswana, 1.7% isiXhosa , 1.5% each was English and Sesotho , 1.3% Afrikaans and 0.7% isiZulu .
