Johan Sundström (born September 21, 1992 in Gothenburg ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who has been under contract with Frölunda HC in the Svenska Hockeyligan since May 2019 .
Career
Johan Sundström began his career as a hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of Frölunda HC , for whose professional team he made his debut in the Elitserien in the 2009/10 season . In his only mission he remained unpunished and punished. He was then selected in the KHL Junior Draft 2010 in the third round as a total of 68th player from HK Budiwelnik Kiev, but initially stayed with his home club, for which he scored a goal in 41 Elitserien missions in the 2010/11 season . He also came as a loan player to a use for Borås HC in HockeyAllsvenskan , the second Swedish division. In the 2011 NHL Entry Draft , he was finally selected in the second round as the 50th player by the New York Islanders .
In 2012 he finally switched to the Islanders and initially played for their farm team , the Bridgeport Sound Tigers . However, he did not get beyond 11 NHL appearances, all of which he completed in the 2013/14 season. After spending the whole of the 2014/15 season with the Tigers, Sundström decided to return to Frölunda HC in his homeland.
Two very successful years followed with Frölunda: in 2016 he won both the Champions Hockey League and the Swedish championship with his team. He was also awarded the Stefan Liv Memorial Trophy as the most valuable player in the play-offs. In 2017 he defended the title win in the Champions Hockey League with Frölunda.
In May 2017 he was signed by HK Awangard Omsk from the Continental Hockey League (KHL) , but was only used in twelve KHL games and was released from his current contract in August 2018. He then got a contract with Kunlun Red Star and returned to the Frölunda Indians in May 2019.
International
For Sweden , Sundström took part in the 2011 U20 World Youth Championship . During the tournament, he prepared a goal in six games.
