Lean Bergmann (born October 4, 1998 in Hemer ) is a German ice hockey player who has been under contract with the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League (NHL) since May 2019 and for their farm team , the San Jose Barracuda , in the American Hockey League (AHL) plays on the position of the left winger . Bergmann embodies the power forward player type .
Career
Bergmann learned to play ice hockey at the parent club of the DEL Club Iserlohn Roosters , the Iserlohner EC . From there he later moved to the junior departments of the Krefeld EV and the Cologne EC , before he was active in the junior division of the Mannheim ERC in the school league for the 2012/13 season . After applying to Swedish clubs, he joined the youth department at Frölunda HC in the summer of 2013 . Despite a lack of language skills, the 15-year-old was the second best scorer of his team in the U16 league. Shortly after the start of the 2014/15 season, the striker moved to Almtuna IS within Sweden . There Bergmann came to work in both the U18 and U20 teams in the following two seasons. In January 2016, he moved to the United States , where he played in the junior league United States Hockey League for the Sioux Falls Stampede . In the 2017/18 season he moved within the league to the Green Bay Gamblers . In 130 appearances in the league, the German collected a total of 53 scorer points by summer 2018 .
Then a move to Western Michigan University should take place, where Bergmann wanted to pursue his academic training. However, through an offer from his ex-club from Iserlohn, he returned to Germany in summer 2018 and began his professional career with the Iserlohn Roosters in the DEL in the 2018/19 season . At the end of the season he was the league's tenth top scorer with 20 goals and was nominated for the DEL Rookie of the Year award, which was won by Mannheim defender Moritz Seider .
As early as January 2019, he was signed by the later German champions Adler Mannheim for two years starting with the 2019/20 season . However, the commitment in Mannheim only came about to a limited extent due to an exit clause, as Bergmann was offered an entry contract by the San Jose Sharks from the National Hockey League at the end of May 2019 . Nevertheless, Bergmann began the pre-season preparation in late summer with the Eagles and completed two appearances in the preliminary round of the Champions Hockey League before traveling to the San Jose Sharks training camp. There he recommended himself for a squad place and made his debut in the NHL in early October 2019. During the season he was also used for the Sharks Farm Team San Jose Barracuda in the American Hockey League (AHL).
International
Bergmann did not play in the junior division for the German junior national teams, but made his debut under national coach Marco Sturm at the Deutschland Cup 2018 for the German senior national team . In this tournament he scored his first international goal in the game against Switzerland . After being the most dangerous German striker at the Euro Hockey Challenge 2019 in preparation for the 2019 World Cup in Slovakia , he was finally nominated for the 2019 world title by national coach Toni Söderholm .
