Dick Axelsson (born April 25, 1987 in Stockholm ) is a Swedish ice hockey striker who has been playing again at Djurgårdens IF in Svenska Hockeyligan since 2018 . He is also active as an inline hockey player.

Career

Started in Huddinge and Djurgårdens IF

Dick Axelsson began his career in 2003 with the Huddinge IK U18 youth team and was promoted to the U20 juniors a year later. There he established himself as a goalscorer and scored twelve goals in 31 games in the 2004/05 season. In the following season, he increased his goal count to 19 goals in 28 games and also prepared 15 goals, which is why he was also used in the same season in the senior team of Huddinge in the third-rate Division 1 and there with 17 goals in 23 games could convince. So he had a share in the promotion to HockeyAllsvenskan .

The Detroit Red Wings then selected him in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft in the second round at position 62. And also in his Swedish homeland they noticed him, so that Djurgårdens IF from the high-class Elitserien signed him. However, his contract with Huddinge IK ran until 2007, which led to clashes between the two teams. Axelsson finally returns to Huddinge two months after the start of the season, where he scored 21 points in 25 games.

In the summer of 2007 after his contract expired, he finally moved to Djurgårdens IF and played a good debut season with twelve goals and 13 assists in the Elitserien, which is why he was appointed to the squad of the Swedish national team for the World Cup after the end of the season . In April 2008, however, there was an argument between Axelsson and the police, after which he had to spend a night in prison. National coach Bengt-Åke Gustafsson then deleted him from the squad before the start of the tournament.

Instead, he played for Sweden in the Inline Hockey World Championship in June 2008 , led the team to win the gold medal with nine goals and seven assists in six games and was voted the most valuable player of the tournament himself .

Change to North America

Dick Axelsson, who signed an entry-level contract with the Detroit Red Wings in the summer of 2008 , was at the time considered an intelligent striker with a hard shot that could also play hard physically. He was also a fast skater. However, he should show more consistent performance and avoid undisciplined actions in order not to collect unnecessary penalty minutes.

At the beginning of the 2008/09 season, Axelsson injured his collarbone in the second game of the season and was out for a long time. After his return, he was able to build on the performance of the previous year and scored 12 points in 18 games, but was transferred from Djurgården to league competitor Färjestad BK in mid-December 2008 after the sports management was dissatisfied with the work ethic and discipline of Axelsson. At Färjestad, he continued his productive season with 18 points in the last 21 games. In the playoffs he injured his hand, returned to the team in the final of the Swedish championship and finally won the title. Shortly thereafter, he received a trial contract with the Grand Rapids Griffins , the Detroit farm team from the AHL , but returned to Sweden before the end of the season and without a mission because his hand injury was not yet cured.

In the fall of 2009, Axelsson finally made his debut in North America and made a good first impression with a goal and an assist in his AHL debut game. He was able to confirm this performance in the following games, before an injury put him out of action for a few games and his form then fell sharply. In mid-November, Axelsson announced that he would like to return to Sweden, but the Red Wings management refused. After more weak games, Axelsson finally went back to Sweden in mid-December, where he attended the training camp of his former team Färjestad BK over Christmas. Eligibility to play in the Elitserien was still dependent on the approval of the Detroit Red Wings, which they finally issued a month later. In May 2011 Axelsson was signed by MODO Hockey after winning the Swedish championship for the second time in his career with Färjestad BK in the previous season and having been elected to the Elitserien All-Star team.

At the 2013 World Cup in Stockholm and Helsinki he was again part of the national team and won the gold medal with it.

Change to Switzerland

In May 2014, Axelsson was signed by HC Davos , where he quickly advanced to become a leading player under head coach Arno del Curto . At the end of the 2014/15 season, he won the Swiss championship with the club . In the 2016/17 season, he first had to take a break due to a concussion, and was then absent for a long time due to a knee operation. On January 23, 2017, he announced that he would not be returning to the ice this season. He played only eight games in the NLA that season. In April 2017 he returned to Sweden and was signed by Färjestad BK.
