Karl Stollery (born November 21, 1987 in Camrose , Alberta ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with Frölunda HC from the Svenska Hockeyligan since May 2019 and plays there in the position of defender .

Career

Stollery played between 2004 and 2008 in his hometown for the youth team of the Camrose Kodiaks, with whom he won the Rogers Wireless Cup , the championship title of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) in 2005, 2007 and 2008 . In the same three years, the team also won the Doyle Cup , which served to qualify for the Royal Bank Cup . The defender himself was elected twice to the AJHL's South Division All-Star Team during this time.

Without being drafted by a team from the National Hockey League , the attacking defender decided to attend Merrimack College by spring 2012 . With his ice hockey team he played in Hockey East , a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . Within the four years Stollery was appointed to numerous selection teams and also took part in the rookie training camp of the Atlanta Thrashers from the NHL. Ultimately, however, it was the Lake Erie Monsters from the American Hockey League (AHL) who secured the services of the Canadian in March 2012 on the basis of an Amateur Tryout Offer (ATO).

After a successful start in the professional field, Stollery received a permanent contract with the Monsters in September 2012, which was rewarded by the Colorado Avalanche in May 2013 and extended by one year with validity for the NHL. There he came to two NHL appearances during the 2013/14 season, as well as five more in the following season, after his contract was renewed in July 2014 by a year. Mainly he spent both playing years in the roster of the farm team in the AHL before he was transferred to the San Jose Sharks in March 2014 in exchange for Freddie Hamilton . There the defensive player could not particularly recommend himself despite another five NHL appearances and played until the end of the 2014/15 season with the Worcester Sharks in the AHL. With the relocation of the team, he came to the AHL for the San Jose Barracuda in autumn 2015 .

After the 2015/16 season , Stollery did not get a new contract in San Jose, so he joined the New Jersey Devils as a free agent in July 2016 and signed a one-year contract there. In addition to eleven missions for New Jersey, the Canadian also worked for the Albany Devils farm team before he ventured to Europe in the summer of 2017. There he spent the 2017/18 season at the Latvian club Dinamo Riga . After a year, he left the club and moved to league rivals Jokerit from the Finnish capital Helsinki in August 2018 . There the Canadian spent another season in the KHL before he moved to the Swedish club Frölunda HC in the Svenska Hockeyligan in summer 2019 .

International

As part of the 2018 Winter Olympics , Stollery made his debut for the senior national team of Canada and won the bronze medal with the team that competed without NHL players.
