Mario Huber (born August 8, 1996 in Innsbruck , Tyrol ) is an Austrian ice hockey striker who has been playing for EC Red Bull Salzburg in the multinational Erste Bank Ice Hockey League (EBEL) since 2017 .

Career

Mario Huber went through the youth stations of HC Innsbruck and played in the National League and Erste Bank Young Stars League , among other things , where he developed into one of the greatest young talents in local ice hockey. For Innsbruck's U20 he made 122 appearances with 73 goals and 113 assists, i.e. 186 points. In 2012/13 he was used in the combat team for the first time, before he was allowed to appear 77 times for the Haie in the EBEL in 2013/14 and 2014/15.

In the summer of 2015 Huber was selected in the first round of the Canadian Hockey League Import Draft in seventh place overall by the Victoriaville Tigres from the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (QMJHL). Until then, he was only the thirteenth Austrian and so far the earliest Austrian draft whose rights went to a North American junior team. In addition, Huber was invited by the NHL Club Canadiens de Montréal to a fifth youth camp in Brossard , Québec , in July 2015 .

In 2015/16 he reached the playoffs with the Victoriaville Tigres and scored 21 goals and 34 assists. He was involved in one of the most spectacular victories in league history when the Tigres turned a 4-0 deficit against Québec Remparts in the third third of the game into a 7-4 win and Huber scored a goal.

Due to the personal efforts of Innsbruck head coach Rob Pallin , Huber was brought back to the sharks in the EBEL for the 2016/17 season, where he scored his first goal in the second game of the season against the Dornbirner EC . For September he was elected EBEL YoungStar of the Month. In the choice of YoungStar of the season, he came second behind David Kickert , goalkeeper of the Vienna Capitals .

After Huber reached the playoff with Innsbruck and was eliminated in the quarter-finals against the Vienna Capitals, he was presented as a newcomer to EC Red Bull Salzburg in March 2017 .

International

Huber won the bronze medal of the 2013 World Cup (Division I Group B) and the silver medal of the 2014 World Cup (Division I Group B) with the U18 national team, contributing six goals and two assists. He also played at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games .

For the U20 national team he played at the World Championships in 2014 , 2015 and 2016 (all of them Division I Group A), winning the silver medal in 2016. In 2015 Huber was the fourth best scorer in Group A and, together with his compatriot Marco Richter, also had the best plus / minus balance.

In February 2015, Huber made his debut for the men's national team during the Euro Ice Hockey Challenge after being called up by team principal Dan Ratushny in January .
