Matt Pelech (born September 4, 1987 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Belfast Giants from the Elite Ice Hockey League since July 2019 .
Career
Pelech began his career in the 2003/04 season with the Sarnia Sting in the junior league Ontario Hockey League , where he was two and a half years on the ice and then moved within the league to the London Knights . In the 2006/07 season he played for the Belleville Bulls and was followed in summer 2007 by the National Hockey League - Organization of the Calgary Flames , who previously as part of the NHL Entry Draft in 2005 had secured the transfer rights to Canadians contracted. There Pelech was used almost exclusively for the then farm team Quad City Flames in the American Hockey League in the following two years , before he played five games for Calgary in the top division of North America for the first time in April 2009. Then the defensive player again spent two seasons with the successor farm team Abbotsford Heat in the AHL, where he could not recommend himself for further assignments with the Calgary Flames and accordingly received no new contract offer after the 2010/11 season.
In the summer of 2011 Pelech was signed by the San Jose Sharks , but got there in the following two years - with the exception of eight NHL games - also exclusively with the farm team Worcester Sharks in the AHL. After the left shooter initially remained without a club at the beginning of the 2014/15 season, he joined the Utah Grizzlies from the East Coast Hockey League in November 2014 , but played on loan for the Rochester Americans in the AHL from December of the same year to April 2015 . In the summer of 2015, Pelech decided to move to Europe and signed a one-year contract with Schwenninger Wild Wings , for which he played in the German Ice Hockey League in the 2015/16 season.
In April 2016, Pelech signed a two-year contract with league rivals Hamburg Freezers , but it was announced the following month that the Freezers would not apply for a license for the 2016/17 season. In September 2016 he was signed by the EC Graz 99ers from the Austrian Ice Hockey League .
For the 2017/18 season he returned to the German Ice Hockey League; in May 2017 he signed with ERC Ingolstadt . His contract was not renewed in Ingolstadt in 2018, so he moved back to Austria to the EC VSV . After a year in Villach, in which he collected 2 goals and 12 assists and 118 penalty minutes in 40 missions, he moved to the Elite Ice Hockey League with the Belfast Giants .
family
Pelech comes from a family of ice hockey. His brothers Michael and Adam are also professional ice hockey players. His uncle Mike Gillis , who among other things worked as general manager at the Vancouver Canucks , had a long NHL career.
Style of play
Pelech is considered to be a strong defensive defender who is noticeable due to his stature with a body-hugging style of play and enormous physical presence and is consequently often involved in fist fights , which often results in a high number of penalty minutes . During his time with the Worcester Sharks, he also played on the right wing position and was used as an enforcer .
Successes and special features
- 2005 Ivan Tennant Memorial Award
- 2006 Most penalty minutes in the OHL playoffs
- 2017 Most penalty minutes in the main round of the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga
