Thomas "Tom" John Rowe (born May 23, 1956 in Lynn , Massachusetts ) is a former American ice hockey player and current coach and official who worked for the Washington Capitals , Hartford Whalers and Detroit Red Wings, among others played in the National Hockey League (NHL). In the 2016/17 season he was general manager and interim head coach of the Florida Panthers from the NHL. Most recently he was the head coach of the EHC Linz .
Career
Tom Rowe began his career as a hockey player with the London Knights , for which he was active from 1973 to 1976 in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey Association. He was then selected in the NHL Amateur Draft 1976 in the third round as a total of 37th player by the Washington Capitals and in the WHA Amateur Draft 1976 in the second round as a total of 20th player from the Winnipeg Jets . The winger finally decided on the contract offer from the Washington Capitals, for which he made his debut in the National Hockey League in the 1976/77 season . In his rookie year , he scored one goal and two assists in twelve games. Most of the season, however, he spent with the Springfield Indians farm team in the American Hockey League .
On January 17, 1980 Rowe was transferred to the Hartford Whalers in exchange for Alan Hangsleben . In Hartford he stayed for two years across the seasons, but lost his regular place in the NHL during the 1981/82 season , whereupon he was ordered to the AHL farm team Binghamton Whalers for eight games . In January 1982, the American finally returned as a free agent to the Washington Capitals, but played there until the end of the season mainly in the AHL farm team, with the Hershey Bears . For the 1982/83 season , the right- shooter moved to the Detroit Red Wings , where he was regularly used in the NHL. Again, however, he had to complete 20 games in the AHL, in which he scored 16 goals and seven assists for Detroit's farm team Adirondack Red Wings . Most recently he was committed for the 1983/84 season by the Edmonton Oilers , but spent the entire season with their AHL farm team Moncton Alpines . He then ended his active career at the age of 28.
From 1991 to 1995 Rowe worked for his former team Hartford Whalers - for two years each as assistant general manager and game scout. He then worked for the Lowell Lock Monsters of the American Hockey League for eleven years . He was responsible for the ice hockey game operations and worked as Director of Player Personnel and General Manager. From 2001 to 2004 he was also the assistant coach of the Lowell Lock Monsters and from 2004 to 2006 their head coach. From 2006 to 2008 he was with the AHL team Albany River Rats behind the gang, with whom he was eliminated both times in the first playoff round of the Calder Cup . He then worked as an assistant coach for the NHL team Carolina Hurricanes for three years and as a professional player scout for the team for a year.
For the 2012/13 season Rowe was obliged as head coach of Lokomotive Yaroslavl from the Continental Hockey League and reached the first round of the play-offs with the team. At the beginning of the following season, the team lost 5 of 6 games, so that Rowe was dismissed on September 19, 2013. His successor was Pyotr Vorobjow . In November 2013 he was hired as the head coach of the San Antonio Rampage from the American Hockey League; he held the position until after the 2014/15 season, when the Portland Pirates became the new Florida Panthers farm team and Rowe is now based in Portland.
In January 2016, however, he was promoted to assistant to General Manager Dale Tallon within the Panthers organization , so that Scott Allen took over as head coach in Portland. In May 2016, Tallon was named President of Hockey Operations and Rowe took over as the Panthers' new general manager. In November 2016 Rowe fired the previous trainer Gerard Gallant and took over his position on an interim basis parallel to his work as general manager. At the end of the 2016/17 season, Rowe resigned from both positions and returned as an advisor to Dale Tallon, who returned to the position of general manager.
In January 2019 Rowe moved to Austria for EHC Linz in the Austrian Ice Hockey League , where he replaced Troy Ward as head coach. He held this position until the end of the 2019/20 season.
