Bernhard Starkbaum (born February 19, 1986 in Vienna ) is an Austrian ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Vienna Capitals in the Erste Bank Ice Hockey League since December 2018 .

Career

Starkbaum began his career at Wiener EV , for which he played 42 games in the National League . At the age of 20 he was hired by the EC VSV in order to be established as the successor to Gert Prohaska . After his move, he was a substitute behind him for a long time, but took over the role of number one after his career ended in the 2011/12 season . This season he led the goalkeeper rating after the regular season with a 93.59 percent catch rate , a value that had never been achieved in the ÖEHL before, and also scored six shutouts , but could not prevent his team from entering the qualifying round failed and missed the playoff participation. In April 2012 he signed for two years with the traditional Swedish club MODO Hockey , where he achieved eight shutouts in his first season , more than any other goalkeeper in the league. Nevertheless, in November 2013 he switched to Brynäs IF , who also competes in the Svenska Hockeyligan . In 2014 he achieved the second best catch quota for Svenska Hockeyligan behind Markus Svensson from Skellefteå AIK .

After a total of four years in Sweden, Starkbaum decided to return to Austria after the 2015/16 season. In May 2016 the EC Salzburg announced its commitment.

In June 2018, Starkbaum signed a one-year contract with EHC Kloten to play in the Swiss League . In December of the same year Starkbaum moved back to his hometown Vienna, to the Vienna Capitals .

International

Starkbaum took part in the U18 World Championships in 2002 and 2004 for Austria .

He made his debut in the men's national team on April 8, 2009 when he lost 3-1 to Russia in Innsbruck . At the World Championships in the top division in 2009 , 2013 and 2015 , he was in the Austrian squad, although he was not used in 2009 and played all seven games in 2013 and 2015. He also played at the World Cup tournaments in Division I in 2010 , 2012 , 2014 when he achieved the third-best catch rate behind the Slovenian Luka Gračnar and the Japanese Yutaka Fukufuji , in 2016 when he was voted the best goalkeeper of the tournament and after the Slovenian Gašper Krošelj achieved both the second-best catch rate and the second lowest goals against goals against, and in 2017 , when he was not only voted again as the best goalkeeper of the tournament, but also in the All-Star team with three shutouts in five games, the best capture ratio and the lowest goal average has been. He also represented his colors in the Olympic qualification and the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi itself.

Starkbaum was also active in inline hockey for the Austrian national team . At the 2008 World Cup in Bratislava , for example, he was on the field with the team from the Alpine region in the top division.
