Gert Prohaska (born March 31, 1976 in Friesach , Carinthia ) is a former Austrian ice hockey goalkeeper who spent most of his career at EC VSV in the Austrian ice hockey league . From the end of his active career to 2014, he served the club as the person responsible for public relations and marketing.

Career

Prohaska began his career in the various youth teams of the EC KAC , but initially as a striker, and in the 1995/96 season made his first appearances as a substitute goalkeeper for Michael Puschacher . However, since Michael Suttnig was able to establish himself there as the successor to Puschacher, he moved to local rivals EC VSV before the 2001/02 season after he had already shown excellent performances in the past season.

From this point on he formed the goalkeeper duo together with Markus Kerschbaumer , but soon played as the clear number one due to their consistently better performances. It was not until the 2004/05 season was a disaster when Prohaska and the rest of the team weakened. After an 8:11 home defeat against the then newcomer to the league and bottom of the table, EC Red Bull Salzburg , the club's board decided to hire the NHL- experienced goalkeeper Reinhard Divis for the rest of the season, so that Prohaska was demoted to a substitute again.

In the following season he was able to build on his old achievements and has since been the undisputed number one of the team again. Since the 2005/06 season , Kerschbaumer was at his side as a goalkeeper coach, while at the same time, Bernhard Starkbaum, a successor was built. In the course of the 2010/11 season he took on Prohaska's role as number one in the team with excellent performance, who then announced his retirement at the end of the season. He played his last game on March 24, 2011. The game decided the semi-final series in favor of the EC KAC. After his resignation, Prohaska worked in the management of the SAAM until 2014. Among other things, he was jointly responsible for the opening of the VSV fan shop in the town hall.

International

Prohaska has also played a few games for the Austrian national team , but announced his resignation in 2007 due to persistent back problems.

Others

Prohaska studied journalism and communication studies in Graz in the 1990s . Since 2016 he has worked as a commentator for ice hockey games on the private broadcaster ServusTV .
