István Sofron ( Hungarian Sofron István ; born February 24, 1988 in Miercurea Ciuc , Romania ) is a Hungarian ice hockey player who has been under contract with MAC Budapest in the Slovakian Extraliga since May 2019 .

Career

István Sofron, who was born as a member of the Hungarian-speaking Szekler minority in Romania, began his career as an ice hockey player with Fehérvári Titánok , for whom he made his debut in the Hungarian ice hockey league in the 2006/07 season . Then the attacker switched to their league rival Alba Volán Székesfehérvár , for whom he was on the ice in the Hungarian ice hockey league and in the Austrian ice hockey league . In September 2010 he was elected EBEL YoungStar of the Month and came in fifth in the 2010/11 season. In 2012 he was the top scorer in the Austrian Ice Hockey League. With Alba Volán he was Hungarian champion in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 . In the summer of 2013, he moved to the Krefeld Penguins in the German Ice Hockey League , where he was the player with the most penalty minutes (110) in the entire league in the 2014/15 season .

In mid-January 2016, the Klagenfurt AC from the Austrian Ice Hockey League announced that István Sofron would be added to its squad with immediate effect. Already for the following season he left the Carinthians again and joined his former club from Székesfehérvár, for which he also played in the Austrian league. In the summer of 2017 he moved to North America and from then on played for Wichita Thunder from the ECHL , which he left again at the end of December to join Villacher SV from the Austrian league.

International

In contrast to other Szeklers who play for Romania, their country of birth, Sofron has competed internationally for Hungary since he was a junior. With the Hungarian junior team , he took part in Division I of the U20 World Cup in 2008 .

In the senior division, he was in his country's squad at the World Championships in Division I in 2010 , 2011 , when he was also voted the best striker of the tournament as the top scorer in 2012 , 2013 , 2014 and 2015 . At the 2016 World Cup , he played in the top division for the first time. He also took part in the qualifying tournaments for the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver in 2010 for Hungary in 2008/09, in the qualifying tournament for the Winter Games in Sochi in 2014 in 2013 and in the qualifying tournament for the Winter Games in Pyeongchang in 2018 in 2016 .
