Mats Hallin (born March 19, 1958 in Eskilstuna ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player ( left winger ) who played for the New York Islanders and Minnesota North Stars in the National Hockey League from 1982 to 1986 .

Career

At the age of 16 he played in the third Swedish division at Åkers IF . He moved to Södertälje SK in the Elitserien . He was also noticed in North America through strong performances in the junior national team. In the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft , the Washington Capitals selected him in the seventh round as 105th.

His target in the NHL wasn't the Capitals, but the New York Islanders . With Anders Kallur and Stefan Persson , the Islanders already had two players from Sweden with whom they had won the Stanley Cup . Hallin couldn't make it to the Islanders right away. After a season with the Indianapolis Checkers in the Central Hockey League , he made the leap to the Islanders during the 1982/83 season . When the team won the fourth Stanley Cup in a row, he was there and after his teammates Kallur, Persson and Tomas Jonsson the fourth Swedish Stanley Cup winner in NHL history.

After three years with the Islanders, he moved to the Minnesota North Stars for the 1985/86 season . Shortly after the start of his second season there, he returned to Europe and played for HC Lugano . In 1987 he returned to Södertälje. Two years later he moved to the Swedish second division for the up-and-coming Malmö IF . The team rose in its first season. After he became Swedish champion with Malmö in 1992 , he ended his active career.
