Karl August Förster (born April 3, 1784 in Naumburg an der Saale , † December 18, 1841 in Dresden ) was a German poet and translator .

Life

Karl August Förster studied theology in Leipzig from 1800 , became adjunct in 1806 and professor at the cadet house in Dresden in 1807. In 1817 his daughter Marie Laura Förster was born, who later worked as a writer.

Förster first came out with the translation of Petrarch's poems (1818-1819), which saw numerous new editions up into the 20th century. Translations by Torquato Tasso and Dante Alighieri followed .

His outline of the general history of literature (1827–1830) remained unfinished. The library of 17th century German poets started by Wilhelm Müller was continued by him and completed in 1838 with the 14th volume.

Förster belonged to the Dresdner Liederkreis .

Förster's own poems appeared after his death with a foreword by Ludwig Tieck . Several of his poems were set to music by well-known composers such as Carl Maria von Weber , Hans Pfitzner and Arnold Schönberg .
