Brian Robert Gibbons (born February 26, 1988 in Braintree , Massachusetts ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with Lausanne HC from the Swiss National League since July 2020 and plays there in the position of right winger .
Career
Gibbons spent his high school years at Thayer Academy and Salisbury School between 2004 and 2007 . The striker then moved to Boston College , where he spent the following four years extremely successful. In addition to his studies, he played between 2007 and 2011 for the hockey team of the college in Hockey East , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In his first year he won with the team both the title of Hockey East and then the national championship of the NCAA. After a mixed second year in college gaming, the team again secured both titles in the 2009/10 season. In addition, Gibbons found himself in the First All-Star Team after he had been elected to the Hockey East All-Academic Team the previous year. In the following season he was then represented in the Second All-Star Team and celebrated the third division title with the college within four years. He played a total of 160 games during this period and posted 164 points scorer .
After successfully completing his studies in the spring of 2011, the undrafted attacker was drawn to the professional field. There he received an offer from the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League in April 2011 . The Penguins then used him at the beginning of the 2011/12 season in their farm team , the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins , in the American Hockey League . There the American was a regular player in the two game years up to the summer of 2013, after which Pittsburgh extended his contract by one year in July 2013. As a result, Gibbons was able to prepare his first NHL games in the first half of the 2013/14 season , before he finally secured a regular place in the second half. At the end of the game year, including the play-offs, there were 49 appearances and 20 scorer points to book.
Nevertheless, both parties did not extend the expiring contract in summer 2014, so the American signed a one-year contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets as a free agent . There he spent the season in roughly equal parts in the NHL and with the Springfield Falcons in the AHL. The brief stint in the Blue Jackets franchise was followed by a move to the New York Rangers . Also with a one-year contract, Gibbons was in the squad of the Hartford Wolf Pack farm team in the AHL for the entire 2015/16 season and did not find a new employer from the NHL after the season. Instead, he accepted an offer from the Albany Devils of the American Hockey League in early October 2016 , where he finally spent the game year. Previously, he had taken part in the training camp of the cooperation partner New Jersey Devils in September , but had not been able to recommend himself for an NHL contract. In July 2017, however, Gibbons received this contract from New Jersey Devils. He then signed a one-year contract with the Anaheim Ducks as a free agent in July 2018 . He did not end the season there, however, as he was given to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Patrick Sieloff after 44 missions in February 2019 . With the Senators he played 20 games by the end of the season and then moved to the Carolina Hurricanes as a free agent . There he commuted between the NHL squad and the AHL squad of the Charlotte Checkers , before joining Lausanne HC from the Swiss National League in July 2020 .
International
At the 2018 World Cup , Gibbons took part in an international tournament for the first time and won the bronze medal there with the USA national team .
