Matt Schneider (born July 10, 1985 in Vernon , British Columbia ) is a Canadian - New Zealand ice hockey player who has played for the Southern Stampede in the New Zealand Ice Hockey League since 2012 .
Career
Matt Schneider began his career with the Beaver Valley NiteHawks in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. From 2003 to 2006 he played for the Tri-City Americans in the Western Hockey League . During this time, he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2004 by the Calgary Flamens in the seventh round as a total of 200th player. However, he never moved to the NHL, but took a degree at the University of British Columbia in 2006 and played during this time for their student team, the UCB Thunderbirds, in the Canada West division of the Canadian University Championship . After completing his studies, he moved to New Zealand in 2012, where he has since played for the Southern Stampede in the New Zealand Ice Hockey League . With the team from Queenstown he became New Zealand champions in 2015, 2016 and 2017. Personally, he was named the most valuable player in the league in 2014. In 2015 and 2018 he was top scorer and in 2018 also top scorer of the league.
International
For the New Zealand national team , Schneider took part in the 2018 World Cup in Division II for the first time after his naturalization .
