Career
Mike Hammond, who was born in the seaside resort of Brighton in the south of England , began playing ice hockey in western Canada. There he first played for various lower-class junior teams in Victoria , the capital of British Columbia , but was also used once by the WHL club Kelowna Rockets . In 2007 he won the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League with the Victoria Cougars, to which he made a significant contribution as the league's top scorer. In 2010 he was named the most athletic player in the British Columbia Hockey League's Coastal Conference . A year later he was elected to the First All-Star Team of the Interior Conference and was the top scorer of the entire BCHL. He then took up studies at Lakehead University and played the following four years for their student team Lakehead Thunderwolves in the West Division of the Ontario University Athletics , a sub-association of the Canadian University Sports Association U Sports . He was elected to the All-Rookie Team in 2012 and in 2015, when he was also named the sportiest player, to the First All-Star Team of the West Division. After graduating, he played another year in the ECHL , where he was used by the Cincinnati Cyclones and the Brampton Beast .
In 2016 Hammond returned to the United Kingdom and initially joined the Scottish Braehead clan from the Elite Ice Hockey League . After a year he moved to league rivals Manchester Storm , for whom he has played since then. In 2018 he was elected to the EIHL All-Star First Team as the league's top scorer.
In July 2019, Hammond left his home country and signed a contract with the Lausitzer Füchsen from the DEL2 , where he met British national coach Corey Neilson .
International
With the British national team , Hammond took part in the 2018 World Cup for the first time when the British returned to the top division for the first time since relegation in the 1994 world championships . At the 2019 World Cup , Hammond scored four goals in seven games, making it the most successful goalscorer and top scorer of the British team, which surprisingly managed to stay in league.
