Giulio Scandella (born September 18, 1983 in Montréal , Québec ) is an Italian - Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with Asiago Hockey in the Alps Hockey League since September 2016 . His younger brother Marco is also a professional ice hockey player. His cousin Diego is currently working as a trainer. His uncle Sergio Momesso played over 800 NHL games.

Career

Giulio Scandella began his professional playing career in 2000 in the Québec Major Junior Hockey League with the Halifax Mooseheads , for which he stormed for two years. He was drawn by the team in the QMJHL Entry Draft in the third round as the 46th player. In 2002 he moved to league rivals Huskies de Rouyn-Noranda and went on goal hunting there for two years before moving to Italy in 2004. In the three seasons in Asiago he came in 87 games on 43 goals and 35 assists.

In 2006 he signed a contract with the Augsburg Panthers from the German Ice Hockey League , where he did not make the breakthrough. He therefore returned to Italy during the current 2006/07 season, where he was active at HC Milano Vipers until 2008 . He played 71 games for the Lombards and achieved a total of 80 scorer points (35 hits and 45 assist ). In summer 2008 Scandella moved to Ritten Sport within the Italian league . In his first season in South Tyrol he reached 58 points in 33 games (26 goals and 32 assists).

He then moved to Sweden to Rögle BK , where he was out for a long time due to an injury and only played 20 competitive games. In 2010 he left Northern Europe and moved to Switzerland. His way there led to HC Ajoie . The striker didn't stay there for long either and after a few games he returned to Italy, where he was signed by the Italian record champions HC Bozen . After a winter in Bolzano, in the summer of 2011 he switched to the reigning runner-up at HC Pustertal , where he was the second Italian-Canadian alongside Nate DiCasmirro and won the 2011 Supercoppa with the club .

Despite a valid contract, Scandella moved to IK Oskarshamn in July 2012 . The club management of HC Pustertal followed Scandella's request to try again in a higher league. In summer 2013 he returned to HC Pustertal, with which he won the Supercoppa for the second time in 2014. Since 2016 he has been playing for Asiago Hockey in the Alps Hockey League , which he won with the club in 2018.

International

The native Canadian, who also has Italian citizenship, was nominated for the Italian national team for the first time in 2006 . He participated with the Azzurri in the top division world championships in 2007 , 2008 , 2010 , 2012 , 2014 and 2017 . In 2011 , 2013 , 2016 and 2018 he made it with the national team from Division I to the 16 best nations in the world. He scored four goals in four games in 2011 and contributed two assists.
