Career
Gander began his career with the WSV Sterzing Broncos in his hometown of Sterzing , which were then playing in the second-rate Italian A2 series . With the Broncos he achieved the championship title in A2 in 2009, but not the promotion to the first class. Gander then went to the United States for a year and played with the North Iowa Outlaws in the North American Hockey League . In 2010 he returned to the Wipptal and this time, after winning the title again in the A2 series, he was promoted to the A1 series with his team . However, the upstart could not stay there. However, Gander himself had attracted the attention of the top club HC Bozen with his performances and switched to the reigning champions in the South Tyrolean capital in summer 2012 . In summer 2013 he moved with his team from the Italian league to the Austrian ice hockey league , which the team won straight away. In 2018, Gander again won the Austrian ice hockey league with the Bolzano team. He then moved to HC Pustertal in the lower class Alps Hockey League .
International
For Italy , Markus Gander took part in the U18 World Junior Championship of Division II for the first time in 2006 . By winning the tournament in Merano , the Italians were promoted to Division I. In the following year , Gander was still on the ice for his team in this age group and was able to help secure relegation in Division I at the tournament in Maribor . At the U-20 World Cup of the same year, the home advantage at the Division I tournament in Torre Pellice was of no use to the Italians, and Gander's team had to make it to Division II in this age group. Group A of Division II of the U-20 World Cup 2008 was held in Italy in December 2007, this time in Canazei , and Gander and his team made an immediate return to Division I. At the U-20 World Cup in 2009 At the end of his junior career with the Italian team at the tournament in Aalborg , Gander managed to stay in Division I.
For the senior national team of the Azzurri, Gander was initially on the ice in February 2013 in Bietigheim-Bissingen at the qualifying tournament for the 2014 Winter Olympics . Although the Italians could not qualify for the games in Sochi , their 2-1 success against the German national ice hockey team ensured that the Austrians were allowed to go to Russia instead of the German team . In April 2013, he took part in Division I of the 2013 World Cup in Budapest , where the Italians were promoted to the top division. There Gander scored two goals at the 2014 World Cup , including the 2-1 winner against France . But this one victory was not enough to keep the league, as all other teams had at least two successes. So he returned to Division I with the Azzurri in 2015 and 2016 . After rising again in 2016, he was again unable to succeed in the top division at the 2017 World Cup and was relegated to Division I again with the Italians. At the 2018 World Cup in Division I , however, he was immediately promoted back to the top division.
