Emerus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Emerus (also Evermus ) was bishop of Trier around 490 .

Little is known about him. The name Emerus is missing from the Prüm Bishops' catalog. From this it was concluded in older research that Emerus and Marus were one and the same person. Today we assume two different people.

The rapid succession of names at the end of the 5th and beginning of the 6th century suggests turbulent times in the period of transition from Roman to Frankish rule in the Trier area. What is certain is that Emerus, like his immediate successors, was in office before the death of King Clovis (511). The small number of sources suggests that the Christian community in Trier is isolated. At times one has even concluded that there was an interruption in the Christian tradition.
