Hartmut Atsma

Hartmut Atsma (born August 10, 1937 in Oldenburg (Oldb) , † August 5, 2009 in Karlsruhe ) was a German historian and diplomat .

Life

Hartmut Atsma attended the Clemens-August-Gymnasium in Cloppenburg and then began studying archeology and history in Münster , where he soon moved to the University of Heidelberg . Karl Ferdinand Werner , who was appointed to the University of Mannheim in 1966, taught here as a private lecturer . Atsma followed him and was with Werner in 1972 with a dissertation on monasteries in Gaul. PhD studies on the research situation and the source situation up to the end of the 6th century . He also followed Werner to Paris at the German Historical Institute (DHIP). From 1971 he worked as a research assistant at the German Historical Institute in Paris, since 1983 as deputy director of the institute in the Hôtel Duret de Chevry, which has been part of the public foundation " German Humanities Institutes Abroad " (DGIA) since 2002 , then Max Weber Foundation.

In March 1989 and from April 1, 1992 to September 30, 1993, he officially headed the institute. In these functions he was responsible for Franco-German and international historians' conferences, including the important one on Neustria in 1985, the award of research grants, the publication of series on Western European history and the journal Francia , as well as the book series Franco-German History . In Paris he taught as a lecturer “chargé de cours” in the 4th section (Section des Sciences historiques et philologiques) of the École pratique des hautes études . He had a close working group with the French paleographer Jean Vezin (* 1933) as joint authors and editors.

Atsma is an expert in the field of early medieval research on monasteries in the Gallic-Germanic area and document research of the Merovingian period , the oldest royal family of the Franks from the early 5th century to 751, and the following Carolingian period . Atsma published two volumes on Neustria between 650 and 850.
