Pierre Riché (born October 4, 1921 in Paris - † May 6, 2019 ) was a French historian .

Pierre Riché studied at the Sorbonne from 1942 to 1948 . He then taught from 1948 to 1951 as a high school professor in Constantine and Le Mans . In 1953 he returned to the Sorbonne. In September 1957 he became a lecturer in Tunis . From 1960 to 1967 he was professor of medieval history at the University of Rennes . After his habilitation in 1962, he was Professor of Medieval History at the University of Paris-Nanterre from 1967 until his retirement in 1989 . From 1972 to 1986 he was director of the Research Center for Late Antiquity and Early Middle Ages (Center de Recherches sur L'Antiquité tardive et le Haut Moyen Age) . Riché's main area of ​​research was the Carolingian era . Here he was considered one of the world's most important specialists.

Together with Danielle Alexandre-Bidon he was the initiator of the successful exhibition “Childhood of the Middle Ages”, which was shown in 1994/95 in the Bibliothèque nationale de France . Riché was the President of the Scientific Advisory Board for the Blois in the Year One Thousand Exhibition in Blois . In 2016, 19 articles by Riché on medieval educational history, published between 1943 and 2008, were published in an anthology.
