Antti Juhani Suomela (born March 17, 1994 in Espoo ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League since June 2018 and at the same time for their farm team, the San Jose Barracuda , in the position of the center plays.

Career

Suomela spent his junior years in the youth division of Espoo Blues , the ice hockey club in his hometown. After the striker had already made it to the top division of this age group with the B-Juniors, he secured the Finnish runner-up with the team a year later. In the A-Juniors jersey, Suomela won two more runners-up titles in 2013 and 2016, which framed the title win in 2014.

In the course of the 2015/16 season , Suomela made it into the regular squad of the professional team and played 52 of the 60 main round games for the team, in which he scored 26 points . For the 2016/17 season , the attacker switched to league competitor JYP Jyväskylä , where he spent two successful years. Suomela developed into one of the best players in the Liiga and increased his points yield to 45 and in his second year to 60 points. He was the best point player in the entire league in the 2017/18 season and received the Veli-Pekka-Ketola trophy for it . He was also elected to the league's all-star team. A few weeks earlier he had won the Champions Hockey League with JYP .

Nevertheless, Suomela left the club after the season and signed a contract with Helsingfors IFK at the end of April 2018 , which was only void a month later. Due to an exit clause, the Finn signed a one-year contract with the San Jose Sharks from the National Hockey League .

International

After Suomela had not played for one of the Finnish junior teams in the junior division, he made his debut for the Finnish national team as part of the Euro Hockey Tour 2016/17 . The striker also made other appearances in the national jersey in the following season, at the end of which he was nominated for the 2018 World Cup in Denmark. There, Suomela only played four games and scored one goal, while the Finns finished the tournament in fifth place.
