Matt Armstrong (born August 9, 1982 in Orleans , Ontario ) is a Canadian - Australian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Melbourne Ice in the Australian Ice Hockey League since 2010 .

Career

Matt Armstrong began his career with the Cumberland Grads in the Central Junior Hockey League. After he was drafted in 1999 at the OHL Priority Selection by the Kitchener Rangers in the 4th round as a total of 65th player, he moved to the club from the greater Toronto area. In the middle of the 2000/01 season he joined the OHL league competitor Peterborough Petes , where he played until 2002. He spent his last junior season with the Plymouth Whalers and the Barrie Colts also in the OHL. After two years on the Concordia University team , he moved to Europe, where he was on the ice in the Netherlands and Germany and in 2009 won the Dutch cup competition with the Nijmegen Devils . After this success he first returned to North America and played there for the Quad City Mallards and the Knoxville Ice Bears , before moving to Deggendorfer SC shortly before the end of the 2010 season, for which he played four more games.

In the summer of 2010 Armstrong moved to the southern hemisphere and joined Melbourne Ice , for which he has since played in the Australian Ice Hockey League . With the club he won the Goodall Cup , the Australian championship , in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2017 . In addition, he won the H Newman Reid Trophy in 2011 as the regular season winner. In 2018 he was nominated for the AIHL All-Star Team.

International

At the 2018 World Cup , Armstrong played for Australia in Division II for the first time after his naturalization .
