The Kiev Sports Palace ( Ukrainian Київський палац спорту , Kyjiwskij Palaz Sportu ) is a multi-purpose hall in the Ukrainian capital Kiev . The largest event hall in the country is located to the north, in the direct vicinity, to the Olympic Stadium ( national stadium ).
history
The sports arena, built according to plans by the architects Mykhailo Hrechyna and Oleksij Savarov, was inaugurated on December 9, 1960. Today it offers 10,000 seats at concerts and around 7,000 at sporting events. In the hall find hockey , basketball and boxing matches held. The home teams include the HK Sokol Kiev ice hockey club and the BK Kiev and BK Budiwelnik Kiev basketball clubs .
In 2005 the Eurovision Song Contest was held in the hall. The Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2009 took place in the Sportpalast for four years . The arena is the venue for other concerts. So occurred u. a. Deep Purple , A-ha , Backstreet Boys , tATu , Anastacia , Britney Spears , Placebo , Depeche Mode and Lenny Kravitz in the hall.
In the first 50 years of its long history, the Kiev Sports Palace has hosted 16 world championships , 28 European championships , 42 championships of the USSR and over 4,000 concerts and theater and stage performances. There were also around 400 exhibitions and trade fairs . More than 24 million visitors came to the events.
