history

The university's history began in 1898 when Arthur Carson, in his capacity as the third Silliman of the Presbyterian Churches in the United States, sought a way to improve the education of Filipinos as a result of the Spanish-American War and the subsequent Philippine-American War . He found a partner in the businessman Horace B. Silliman to finance an educational institution in the Philippines. Both surprised the board of the churches with the plan to take action in the Philippines, but the board of the churches objected that it was too early because of the war. However, Silliman had experience in founding and funding educational institutions in the United States, such as the Hampton Institute of Virginia, now Hampton University . Both convinced the board of directors of the Church to establish a school based on the Hampton model in the Philippines. The board then commissioned David S. Hibbard to look for a location for the school. He chose Dumaguete because there was no higher educational institution on Negros . On August 28, 1901, the Silliman Institute was opened. In 1938 the institute received university status.
