Juris Štāls (born April 8, 1982 in Riga , Latvian SSR ) is a Latvian ice hockey player who has been under contract with HK Kurbads in the Latvian ice hockey league since July 2015 .
Career
Juris Štāls began his playing career as a junior player with Lukko Rauma , before he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2001 by the New York Rangers in the ninth round in 269th place. The Rangers brought him to North America and he played for the Sarnia Sting in the Ontario Hockey League . At the beginning of the 2002/03 season he went for Vaasan Sport in the Mestis on the ice, but later moved back to the OHL to Owen Sound Attack and also made his debut in the American Hockey League . In the 2003/04 season he was a permanent member of the AHL squad of the Hartford Wolf Pack , the Rangers farm team . He spent the next two years with the Charlotte Checkers in the ECHL , which in turn are the farm team of the Wolf Pack. From the summer of 2006, Štāls played again in Europe and came to HK Riga 2000 via the stations Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod , HC Oceláři Třinec and HK Njoman Hrodna .
In October 2009, Štāls was signed by the Quad City Mallards from the International Hockey League and completed 74 games for the franchise. In June 2010 he returned to Latvia to his old employer Dinamo Riga.
From July 2012 he played for HK Kryschynka Kompanjon Kiew from the Ukrainian ice hockey league before moving to HK Poprad in the Slovakian extra league at the turn of the year 2012/13 . There he spent the following 2 seasons with a short break at HC Energie Karlovy Vary .
International
Juris Štāls has played in one junior championship each for the Latvian U18 and U20 teams . In addition to being appointed to the squad for qualifying for the 2006 Winter Olympics , he was used at the 2006 , 2008 and 2010 World Cups .
