Márton Vas ( Hungarian Vas Márton ; born March 2, 1980 in Dunaújváros ) is a former Hungarian ice hockey player and today's coach who was active in Germany at EHC Freiburg and the Frankfurt Lions . He also played in his home country for many years with Dunaferr SE Dunaújváros and Alba Volán Székesfehérvár . His younger brother János is also a professional ice hockey player. He has been the head coach of the Hungarian U20 national team since 2018 .

Career

Márton Vas began his career as a hockey player in the youth of Dunaferr SE Dunaújváros , for whose professional team he was active in the Hungarian ice hockey league from 1996 to 2006 . During this time, the attacker won the national championship three times and the national cup six times with his team. Furthermore, the left shooter was six times runner-up with Dunaferr SE Dunaújváros. In the summer of 2006 he finally moved to the Briançon Alpes Provence Hockey Club in the French Ligue Magnus . With Briançon he was runner-up in 2008 and 2009 and was twice in the final of the Coupe de la Ligue in the same period .

For the 2009/10 season Vas returned to his homeland and signed a contract with Alba Volán Székesfehérvár , for which he has since played in the Austrian ice hockey league and the Hungarian ice hockey league. In 2010, 2011 and 2012 he became Hungarian champion with Alba Volán. In 2013 he moved to Germany to the Löwen Frankfurt , with whom he was promoted to the DEL2 in the first season . After spending the 2015/16 season at SHC Fassa in the Italian Serie A , he returned to DEL2 in summer 2016, where he was on the ice for EHC Freiburg .

In 2017, he ended his career at the age of 37. In the 2019 he rose as head coach with the Hungarian U20 team unbeaten from the B group to the A group of Division I.

International

For Hungary , Vas took part in the junior division in the U20 Junior C World Championship in 2000 and the U20 Junior B World Championship in 1999 .

At senior level Vas stood in the line-up of his country at the World Championship Division I in 2001 , 2003 , 2004 , 2005 , 2006 , 2007 , 2008 , as he's third best scorer of his countrymen Balázs Ladányi and Krisztián Palkovics was in 2010 , 2011 , 2012 , 2013 , 2014 and 2015 . He was also a member of the Hungarian team, which played in the top class of the world championships for the first time in 70 years at the 2009 World Cup, but could not avoid relegation immediately. In 2014, he was deployed not as a center, but as a defender, and as such was elected to the All-Star Team of the Division I A group tournament. With his equalizer to 4: 4 shortly before the end of regular time and the converted penalty in the decisive penalty shootout against Japan , he thwarted the rise of the East Asians to the top division at this tournament. A year later, he led the Magyars as team captain six years after relegation to promotion to the top division, in which he played for the second time since 2009 in 2016 .

He also took part in the Olympic qualification for the Games in Turin 2006 , Vancouver 2010 , Sochi 2014 and Pyeongchang 2018 .

Vas was also active in inline hockey for his home country and took part in the 2008 World Cup , in which the Hungarians finished 14th out of 16 teams.
