Joachim Böhmer
Hans-Joachim Böhmer (born October 1, 1940 in Berlin ; † December 28, 1999 there ) was a rower from the GDR . In 1972 he was Olympic third in double sculls .
Sporting development
Joachim Böhmer had started touring rowing in 1953 and took part in regattas from 1957. The rower from SC Dynamo Berlin competed in seven different boat classes at GDR championships and won a total of nine championship titles. At the 1966 World Cup, he won bronze with eighth . In 1969 Böhmer won the GDR championship in one and finished second at the European championships behind Alberto Demiddi but ahead of Jochen Meißner . From 1970 Böhmer competed in a double scull with Hans-Ulrich Schmied . The two won silver at the 1970 World Championship, gold at the 1971 European Championship and bronze at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. In 1971 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze.
Böhmer was married to the European rowing champion Irmgard Brendenal . The trained brewer later studied political science and then worked as a criminalist for the People's Police in Berlin-Köpenick.
