Hans-Ulrich Schmied

Hans-Ulrich Schmied (born February 23, 1947 in Meißen ) is a former rower from the GDR . In 1974 he became world champion in double sculls .

Life

Hans-Ulrich Schmied started out as a breaststroke swimmer and after switching to rowing, he was at times active in both sculling and oar rowing . After he had finally decided on the sculling boats, he won the 1968 GDR championships in one. At the Olympic Games in 1968 he competed with Manfred Haake in a double scull and finished fifth. Together with Joachim Böhmer , Schmied took second place at the 1970 World Rowing Championships. Two years later, the two received at the 1972 Olympicsin Munich the bronze medal. After Schmied had become GDR champion with Böhmer in 1970 and 1971, he was able to row the title with Christof Kreuziger in 1973 and 1974 . Kreuziger and Schmied won the 1973 European Championships and 1974 the World Championships. At the 1976 Olympic Games , Schmied competed with Jürgen Bertow and again received the bronze medal. In 1977 Schmied won his fifth GDR championship title in double sculls together with Rüdiger Reiche . At the 1977 World Championships, the two received the silver medal. Schmied rowed for SC Berlin-Grünau during his career . In 1971, 1974 and 1976 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze.

After completing an apprenticeship as a concrete worker, Schmied started studying civil engineering. As a graduate engineer, he worked as a research assistant at the State Secretariat for Physical Culture and Sport. After the fall of the Berlin Wall , he moved to an architectural office in Berlin.
